Remy put a hand over her stomach. She was nauseated. “Is that what will happen to Najeddine? I don’t want him to die. He tried to—"

Archer put up his hand. “Please don’t tell me what he or you did. The more I know, the worse it will be for you both. There are always consequences. Currently, he will be banished from the society. If he breaks his vow, then, well… You get it?”

She did. She closed her eyes for a second and tried to regain her equilibrium. “What vow?” she asked.

Archer smiled slightly. “I can’t tell you now. You and I will meet later this week or at the beginning of the next. You can come down the stairs to the door, and you will be let in. Just make sure you have your key with you. We will go over everything you need to know then.”

She nodded.

“And Remington,” he sent a point gaze toward Hawk and Dragan. “Come alone.”

She let out a sigh and headed for the door. Hawk and Dragan fell in behind her.

“She has the protection of the society now, gentlemen. No one will hurt her.”

Remy stopped and looked over her shoulder.

“Forgive me if I don’t take your word for it,” Hawk said.

Archer’s lips curved slightly upward. “Suit yourself.” He looked at Dragan. “I would like to meet with you.”

Dragan’s face remained impassive. “When?”

“I’ll get back to you.”

“Fine.” Dragan leaned over and pushed the button for the door, and they all exited the room.

“Are you okay?” Hawk asked in a low voice as they walked down the hallway and entered the upper gallery once again.

Was she okay? She had no fucking clue. “I think so,” Remy said.

“I’m going to leave you two here. I have things to do,” Dragan said.

“Thanks for coming to our rescue,” Remy said and then leaned up and beckoned Dragan down so she could kiss his cheek.

“It was all Hawk. I was just window dressing.” The two men bumped shoulders and nodded at one another and then Dragan disappeared down the dark hallway.

“He’s right. You saved my life.”

Hawk grimaced. “I almost got you killed. I didn’t sense Chan.”

“You can hardly be blamed for that. There was a lot going on and, to be fair, since Dragan was also there, maybe we weren’t in quite as much danger so you didn’t pick up on it.”

He glanced at her. “Nice try.” Then he froze and cocked his head. In a split second, he whisked her behind a sculpture of a young woman with an umbrella and into the shadows.

“What?” she murmured, but he shook his head. Then voices reached her.

“I thought Najeddine was taking care of it. That’s why I had you back off getting the key. It was a mistake. I should have taken the key. Then the place on the board could have been eliminated all together. It will be a nightmare with her in control. Mark my words, she’ll be just like her grandfather.”

A second man spoke. “I took care of him. Let me take care of her.”

Remy’s heart went into her throat, and her stomach nose-dived to her feet. She looked at Hawk. He squeezed her shoulders. She leaned over just a bit to see who it was that had killed her grandfather.

“No. At least not yet. She’s new. If anything happens to her now, it will be suspicious. We’ll wait. See what transpires. We have time.”

She squinted, and the two men came into focus when they stopped a few feet away. Austin Davis and the bald man with the scar. Archer’s man! Did Archer have her grandfather killed?

Hawk squeezed her shoulders again and gave her a very small shake. When she looked back at him, he raised his chin toward the statue that was just down from them. She peered into the darkness. Archer moved forward just enough so she could see him, and then he slunk back into the darkness.
