Gerri patted her hand, trying to soothe her. "Some people need a little nudge in the right direction. A guiding hand if they stumble along the pathway to love. I'm just trying to be that guiding hand."

She wondered who she was talking about exactly. Because she knew her love life wasn't fabulous either.

Before she could say anything, the Texan excused himself. Mason turned back to them, holding that wonderful smile once more.

"Well." Gerri pushed herself up. "I really should be getting ready for the event. Don't want to be a mess when it starts. Mason, if you could be a lad and take over from here."

She patted her dress down and then looked back up at them. "Oh, before I forget. I also have you guys seated next to each other, so do enjoy each other's company."

Mason looked confused. Then she realized he must not have known Gerri had set them up. She didn't know if that was a good or bad thing. Would he be okay with that? Would he be insulted that he was stuck with her instead of someone else?

Mason smiled after a moment, grabbing his ticket from Gerri. "I would love to. I hope your event goes as well as you want it to."

Gerri gave them each a soft smile. "Enjoy the show. Be sure to stop and say goodbye before the evening is over. I hope you both enjoy it."

And just like that, Gerri was gone, and they were alone. Mason turned to her and held a hand out. "Shall we find our seats?"

She took his hand, liking how strong and sturdy it felt under hers. He pulled her out of the booth, and she was given her hand back.

Mason was a gentleman. He guided her expertly across the room as they walked, and he opened the door for her. Mason even held the seat bottom down so she could sit when they found their places.

She couldn't deny that everything he did only made her like him even more. He was as sweet as he was handsome, a package for sure.

"I hope Gerri didn't spring this on you like she did me," he said, shaking his head. "She has a way of being secretive about things. But I guess you might already know that."

She smiled. "It's all right. I should have known something was up when she gave me the ticket. I hope you're okay with this arrangement."

She would hate for him to admit it. It would be heart-crushing, honestly. But the words slipped out before she could take them back.

To her surprise, Mason's smile widened. "I have to admit, this is a pleasant surprise. I'm glad you accepted the ticket."

Mason didn't break eye contact. It wasn't a stare, but it wasn't a glance at her either. He seemed to be genuinely intrigued by her. She placed her hands together, feeling her face growing hot over all the attention.

No one held the door for her. No one stared at her with that gaze. It was making her crazy.

Even when the lights dimmed, and the gentle music of the show began, he didn't look away.

He couldn't even pay attention to the play on the stage. Sitting so close to Ellie was making his entire body erupt in heat. He could smell her, and he watched how mesmerized she was by the play.

He felt his heart flutter seeing her lean forward, taking in the show. He wasn't paying attention to it. He was totally focused on Ellie.

All he could think was that Ellie was his mate. She was his fated mate. Holy shit!

He pulled his eyes back to the play just as the intermission started. He tried to play it off like he'd watched the entire thing and looked at Ellie with a smile. The lights started to brighten, allowing him to take in her features.

Her eyes were a light blue, and her hair was mahogany with highlights. Her lips looked plum with her lipstick, and her eyes were gentle.

"That was good so far."

Ellie softly chuckled, turning toward him. She leaned closer and whispered at him. "It's lovely. I'm impressed with the entire thing so far."

He smiled, liking how gentle she was speaking to him. He leaned closer to her. "So, why don't you get out more often? Don't you attend these kinds of things?"

She shrugged. "I spend a lot of time at work and at home. Books are my adventure."
