She slid easily into her chair in the little office off the dining room. And she was just putting her camera on when Ellyn’s video came on.

“Hi, friend.” Ellyn waved excitedly. Rhiannon heard her friend’s dog barking in the distance.

“Hi, darling,” Rhiannon replied warmly. As much as she loved her alone time with Mars, she missed her friends.

“Okay, let’s jump right in,” Ellyn said, and Rhiannon nodded. They were planning for year two of the shelter project.

Mars came silently into the office just after the meeting ended. He handed her a tray. On it was a plate with toast, eggs, and bacon, along with a jug of orange juice and a mug of freshly brewed coffee.

“You’re a lifesaver,” Rhiannon groaned. “I still have three reports to get through.”

“Anytime, babe.” He smiled easily. “I’m going to take a run through the woods now.”

She nodded. Mars had been shifting into his bear form at least once a day. She was glad that he had this time away from his office too.

She had never seen him this relaxed. It seemed that allowing his bear to have more freedom helped with his mental well-being.

How did he manage living in the city?Rhiannon asked herself as she tucked into her breakfast.

She pulled up the reports on her laptop and took out a fresh notepad.

Rhiannon left the home office in the late afternoon. Since Mars had made breakfast, she decided to make supper.

Anita had left fresh fish in the refrigerator, and Rhiannon put it in the oven. Then she peeled potatoes.

Mars came in from his shower just as she took the fish out of the oven.

“Whatever that is, it smells amazing,” he said. Rhiannon didn’t miss the yawn behind his words.

“You look tired,” she murmured as she dished up plates of food.

“I am.” He nodded. “I did some work while you were working. And I’ll have to do it again tomorrow.”

“Well, it is a lot of work being one of the largest real estate moguls in the south,” Rhiannon said teasingly.

“You can say that again,” Mars groaned.

“Have some wine. You’ll be fine.” She splashed copious amounts of red wine into glasses.

Mars finished his in two gulps, and Rhiannon looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

“That bad, huh?”

“You have no idea,” he said, and then he really yawned.

“Tonight, we should just unwind,” Rhiannon suggested. “Let’s watch a movie.”

“Yeah, and let’s avoid Scrabble tonight. I don’t want to start another hundred-year war.”

Rhiannon burst into a fit of laughter as she remembered the night before. Both Mars and she were very competitive. Their game of Scrabble had ended in an argument, with Mars accusing Rhiannon of cheating because her score was so high.

“Yeah, let’s just avoid game night,” she murmured.

Her breath caught in her throat when she looked up at Mars. He was looking down at his plate, and his profile was highlighted by the candlelight.

He is so perfect. I have never been this perfectly loved before.

The knowledge settled on her like a warm blanket, and something in her chest twisted.
