And in an instant, a large, white wolf stood in front of Mars. Mars growled and leapt. And the storm knocked the electricity out.

The suite was mostly in darkness, illuminated only by errant flashes of lightning.

Mars caught the wolf shifter by the neck, sinking his teeth into the flash. The wolf yelped, growling, wriggling away from Mars.

Mars lumbered forward, his heavy weight pushing all the furniture in front of him aside. The wolf backed away.

Mars watched as fury flashed through the wolf’s eyes. Then the wolf came at him with his teeth bared.

Mars moved back quickly and swiped at the wolf with a paw. His claw caught the animal in the side. He drew blood, and fur went flying. The wolf stumbled off to the side, and Mars leapt at him again.

The bear was angry, and a low rumbling growl vibrated in his chest as he went at Dave again and again.

The wolf was becoming tired, and he had already lost a couple of teeth.

But Mars's rage was relentless, and it was truly the only thing keeping him going.

All he saw as he attacked Dave without mercy was the face of Dave’s wife and child. As well as the face of every dead woman resembling Rhiannon.

And most importantly of all, he saw Rhiannon’s face. Her face when she was scared, looking at the threats. Her face when she pushed the threats aside.

Mars saw her face as she continued on with her work, day after day, despite every threat she got.

After Dave, Mars knew he would hunt down every person who threatened Rhiannon again.

The wolf pounced forward, catching Mars off guard. But he righted himself quickly and swatted at the wolf. The wolf fell to the ground and stayed there. But he was still alive.

Mars shifted back to his human form and instantly put a foot on the wolf’s neck.

“Mr. Henson, I could lie and say it has been a pleasure meeting you. But you are a stain on this earth, and you are going to leave a bad taste in my mouth as long as you are alive.”

Mars started shifting back to his bear form.

“It will be a pleasure killing you, though.”

The last word came out in a growl as the bear took over. Mars sank both paws into the wolf’s neck and twisted.

With one quick movement, he pulled the wolf’s throat out.

The wolf’s body went limp.

Mars shifted back and fell to his knees. His body shook with exhaustion as he surveyed the scene in front of him.

All he wanted right then was Rhiannon. To have her hold him in her arms. To have her tell him that everything would be okay.

Because he had found the person threatening his mate and had put him down. Like an alpha was supposed to do.

A small whisper of triumph trembled through Mars as he looked at the wolf’s body before he stood.

He went over to the intercom of the penthouse suite and pressed it. “Marissa? Please put a call through to my assistant, Lenard.”

TWENTY-TWO

RHIANNON

Rhi returned home, still angry at Mars. Pulling her suitcase out of the car’s trunk, she stalked inside, threw the keys on the side table, and rolled her luggage into her bedroom. As promised, she called Lenard so he could have Mars’s car picked up.

For the rest of the day, she moped around her home, just thinking about how wonderful her getaway with Mars had been. Then, this.I hate it when men go all caveman on me. I can take care of myself! Just what justified him doing that?
