“You can’t keep secrets?”

“Oh no, I can keep secrets. I just don’t realize how awful something sounds until I see the reaction of the person I’m talking to… I’m not subtle.”

“Being direct isn’t always a bad thing,” he said.

“It isn’t my only flaw.”

“Everyone is flawed.”

Locking her fingers around her cup, that comment drew her closer. “What’s your biggest flaw?”

Another flash of a smile. “Oh, I meant everyone except me. I’m completely perfect.”

The guy was hilarious. His suggestive wit gave him a shrewd, sly air that somehow made her skin sparkle. She didn’t know how he did it or why her body reacted to a man who wasn’t even attracted to her sex, but she wasn’t surprised. If there was a way to sabotage herself, she’d find it.

“I talk to myself… and inanimate objects. Not just talk, but converse like I hear them respond,” she said. “I think I should be a crazy cat lady, but my roommates won’t let me get a pet.”

“So you’re a crazy cat lady without a cat.”

“Exactly,” she said. “I play music in my head sometimes… Rain is my favorite weather. Ironic given my name.”

“Is it short for Lorraine?”

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “Rainie is it. Maybe that’s why I love to be outside in the rain… I’ve always wanted to make love in the rain, but never found a willing guy…” She frowned at herself. “Does that sound like I just go around asking guys to have sex with me when it’s raining?” His lips curled, which was confirmation enough. “I don’t… I really don’t.”

“What did your boyfriend say when you asked him?”

“Right now I don’t have a boyfriend.” His expression flattened. “Demetri and I broke up five months ago… He went to some island somewhere to shoot a movie.”

“He’s an actor?”

Pulling the straw up, she pushed it back down to stir it around in her drink. “Sort of,” she said. “He was an underwear model, not like Times Square Calvin Klein, more catalog… He had big ideas, poor execution.”

His smirk was telling. “A model dater, huh?”

“You’re laughing at me.”

“No! No, not at all.”

Except his smile was even wider. Hooking an ankle around her chair leg, she shuffled closer. “You should laugh at me. Dem was the first model I ever dated. We met through work. A client brought him in for a specific campaign. We don’t usually let clients cast ads, but it was a big client… Not my department exactly, definitely not my department to ask questions. It’s my department to keep clients happy. I had to meet with Dem to report back to Mr. Donal… just to check he wasn’t a freak.”

“And you fell in love.”

Her brows went up as her eyes rolled back. “Fell into something way faster than we should have…” She took a deep breath. “You know, I’m not the kind of woman who leaps into bed on a first date. I don’t always have the best judgment, so I like to take my time… And I think that’s okay. Foreplay doesn’t have to be limited to the minutes before sex. Done right, it can last days… weeks even.” His blink reminded her where they were and that they were strangers. “Oh my God, I’m talking about foreplay. Guess I was wrong when I said it couldn’t get any worse.”

“I’m enjoying myself,” he said, relaxing against the back of his chair. His knee passed hers as he manspread her way. “Tell me more.”

With her fingers curled, she rested her chin on the heel of her hand. “Why don’t you tell me what you do?”

“Foreplay?”

Tease. “For a living,” she asked, enjoying his playfulness.

“I’m a consultant.”

The little line between her brows creased. “You ever hear some words and nod along while never quite understanding what they mean?”

“All the time.”
