“I want you to get it done. I sent backup. Are you telling me you and Payne can’t get it done… together?”

“Only way this happens is if you show face. I told you. How many times—”

“It’s a no go. How many times do I have to tell you that I won’t join negotiations? Rainie is my only priority.”

That was sweet and startling. She took the chicken from the pan to replace it with the garlic and onion.

“This is a billion-dollar deal, Xander,” Ethan said with trepidation and caution. “We lose sixteen months if we—”

“As long as Rainie needs me, I’m here.”

“I don’t need you,” she said, attracting his attention. “I don’t.”

There was a pause on the line. Xander lost some of his starch as he relished her revealing herself.

“R… Rainie?” Ethan asked.

“Yes, Rainie,” she said. “I don’t need him right now if you need him. I don’t want him screwing up a billion-dollar deal… How will he send all our future babies to college and buy them Ferraris if he squanders deals like that?”

Xander laughed and sloped her way to kiss her head. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“Are you in bed?” Ethan asked, suspicious.

“If we were in bed, I wouldn’t have answered,” Xander said.

“You didn’t, I did,” she said, reaching over to steal a mushroom. “And I want you to go. Your business is important.”

“You’re more important,” Xander said. “I want to be here.”

“And I want you to prove you can do both. You can be Xander Gauge and my Alex at the same time.”

“This is getting complicated,” Ethan muttered.

“No, not complicated. We don’t use that word in front of the future Mrs. Gauge.”

She laughed. “You’re really on a role tonight.”

“Just wait until later. You’ll love what I’ve got lined up for you.”

“You won’t be here later,” she said. “Topher will already be warming up the jet.”

“She knows,” Ethan said in wonder.

Xander went to wash his hands. “Everything,” he said. “We’re doing honesty.”

“All the way,” she said, concentrating on her cooking until Xander’s hands crept around her ribs to cradle her breasts.

“All the way?” he murmured into her hair.

“When do you need him, Mr. Atwell?”

“He’s got enough of an ego,” Xander said, continuing his progress until his arms were tight around her. “Don’t encourage it.”

“I’ve got an ego?”

She slipped out of his embrace, putting the spoon in his hand while she dealt with the stock. “How long is the flight between here and Sydney?”

“A day,” Ethan said. “Topher still have the jet?”
