“I…”

Roxie exhaled. “Girl, you don’t want to walk into this blind. Do your people know we know each other?”

“I didn’t know we knew each other.”

“Oh, Xander comes with a whole posse and we’re the power behind the crown. One sec.” She went over to open the front door and peek outside. “Yo, Trev! There’s a coffee shop across the street. Will you go get supplies, please?”

“They sell booze?” a male on the hallway side of the door asked.

“No,” Roxie said with exaggerated offense. “It’s far too early for getting drunk, Trevor, don’t be ridiculous. We want coffee. Mocha frappe for Rainie, hold the whip. And bring muffins.”

“I’m not your valet,” the male grumbled.

“Fine, make me go over there. See how quick you need to find yourself a new place to live. You want the lurker to know where we are?”

“You’re being dramatic.”

“And you like to complain.”

“I’ll send one of my guys.”

“Whatever. I don’t care who goes. Crack that whip. Run your own department.” Roxie started to come in but swung back out. “You have no intention of leaving this door yourself because you don’t trust I’d still be here when you get back, right?”

“Yeah,” Trevor drawled.

“Okay, just clearing that up.” Roxie came in, thrusting the door into the frame. “Let’s go sit over there.”

Roxie went to straighten the curtain then dropped onto the end of the couch.

She went to sit at the other end. “You came here to check me out?”

“No,” Roxie said, kicking off her shoes to bring her feet onto the couch. “I’m here for you.”

“What did I do?”

On a laugh, Roxie leaned over to touch her shoulder. “Listen, honey, I heard ‘Chicago’ and was already on the plane. You’re here, by yourself, and you’re dealing with a lot. You’re not alone. Whatever you need, we’re here for you.”

Someone acknowledging that gave her such a sense of relief. She hadn’t considered it, but it had been an emotional few weeks.

The heavy ruby on Roxie’s hand was incredible. She’d dub it awesome, in the original sense of the word.

“That’s beautiful.”

Roxie adjusted the angle of her hand. “Yeah, I don’t have to workout this arm. Dragging this thing around all day is workout enough.” She paused. “And let me guess, you’re wondering if it changes things.”

“It does change things,” she said. “And to be honest, I don’t know…”

“You’re doubting yourself?”

“You don’t come from money, do you?” she asked. Roxie shook her head. “I can’t even imagine that much money. I’m no royal heiress, how would I fit in with that crowd?”

“On Xander’s side, this is the crowd you have to fit in with,” Roxie said, gesturing up and down at herself. “Your friends, the ones you have now, if they’re real friends, there’s no need to drop them. The people in Xander’s life, the true, close ones who mean something to him, they don’t care about society princesses or airs and graces. Have you talked about the future?”

“We’re barely past the past.”

“The bet.”

“Xander calls it a deal, but yeah. We started in a lie.”
