The last time she needed my protection was at a party in the late spring of our senior year. She’d shown up with some of her sophomore friends, the first party I’d ever seen her at. My girlfriend had just dumped me for another guy, which was fine. I was leaving for the Navy shortly after graduation anyway and didn’t want to be tied down to anything in Glendale Falls.

At the party that night, I hung back in the shadows, wallowing in my beer, but I watched Mia for entertainment. The way she laughed whole-heartedly while playing a silly drinking game with her friends, she was—stunning. And I wasn’t the only guy in the room noticing. Naturally beautiful with her chocolate-colored hair in waves down her back, she was a fresh sight. I was used to seeing her hair in braids or up in a ponytail and often in a baseball cap, more like a tomboy. Tonight, she transformed into a gorgeous girl.

She was still awkward with her height though, those skinny long legs in tight blue jeans, stumbling on her chunky heeled boots. I chuckled when she attempted dancing while holding a beer in her hand, spilling some on her pale blue blouse. And I frowned when she returned from the kitchen with two guys who had taken an interest in her and made sure her glass was always full.

Such was the problem with Mia. Big-hearted, super smart, and a little naïve. Add to it the fact that she always looked younger than her age, and she was the perfect target for undesirable characters to take advantage of.

When the assholes started talking her into doing shots—one suggesting a body shot—I went on full alert. She pushed back away from the shortest guy when he tried to lick her neck mid shot. “Good girl,” I muttered and moved to intercede.

“There you are, Mia. Didn’t you promise me this dance?” I grabbed her hand and yanked her away with me to the dance floor. The song, Every Rose Has Its Thorns, started playing. I brought her body into mine, encircling my arms protectively around her, and shot the two assholes a warning glance to stay away.

She didn’t appreciate my attempts to protect her virginity, though. The way she pushed against me said as much. I followed her to the kitchen, where she turned on me.

“Damn you, Teddy. You owe me a body shot now,” she spat, crossing her arms in front of her. “I was finally going to find out what a body shot is when you grabbed me away. So…”

My mouth gaped. “I know you’re not serious right now.”

“Completely. I didn’t come to this party with my friends tonight to be a sophomore wallflower. I want experiences to write in my journal tonight, and I won’t let you stop me.”

The stupid journal of hers . . . She always said she filled it with her life experiences, so someday when she wrote the great American novel, she’d have plenty of fuel to write good literature. The only thing Cruz and I knew of literature was the semester we had to read a Mark Twain classic in school. Sometimes we teased her, calling her Mia Twain.

She grabbed a bottle of tequila, a salt shaker and lime, and held them out to me. Her eyes were enormous, inquisitive yet defiant. “It’ll either be you or someone else.”

“Mia, my lips are not coming near your body.” I valued my life too much. Cruz would probably kill me if he saw my lips on his baby sister.

“Then it’ll be mine on yours. Walk me through how to do this.” Her lips held a deeper red tone with a delectable sheen in the center of her bottom lip. Was she wearing lipstick? Damn, she was growing up.

I craned my neck, looking around the party for the guy who’d kick my ass into next Sunday if I did what she asked.

“Relax. Cruz went outside to smoke with Darcy, and probably to make out too.” Mia took two steps closer in front of me, daring me. The familiar citrus scent of her hair products wafted over me. If sunshine held a scent, I figured it was hers, bottled up and brightening everyone’s lives.

I quickly weighed the pros and cons and concluded Cruz would probably prefer she conduct this experiment with me over some other asshole. “Fine, but make it quick.”

“Yay!” She sounded way too giddy about this.

I shrugged. “It’s really not a big deal. Body shots are childish, honestly.” I took the stuff off her hands.

She cleared the kitchen bar top and patted it. “Hop up and lift your shirt. I pour the alcohol into your navel, right?”

“Uh, no. Let’s start with the basics. First rule: no hands.”

“No hands. Got it.”

“Now lick my neck, then shake a little salt on it.”

She leaned up on the tips of her toes to reach my neck, then slobbered a wet tongue down it.

I jerked back and wiped it off. “Jeez, Mia. Not like a wet rag. A little tongue goes a long way. You gotta try to be, er, sexy and stuff. Try again.” I leaned over closer to her to make it easier.

This time, she slowly positioned her lips near my neck. They brushed my skin, but when her tongue parted her lips and swirled on my neck, she sent a shiver down my spine. The reaction was a surprise. And what she did next . . . the tip of her tongue slid up the pulse of my neck to just below my earlobe. I closed my eyes for a moment, fighting back a little lust.

“Was that sexy enough for you?” she whispered, her breath feathering across my ear.

I cleared my throat and took a step back, sprinkling salt on the wet spot. “Um, yeah. Where’d you learn shit like that?”

“I practice with my girlfriends when we have sleepovers,” she giggled. I was pretty sure she was pulling my leg. Even so, the vision kind of stuck with me.

“All right, whatever. Now, just remember, lick, shoot, suck. You’ll lick the salt off me, drink the shot, then take the lime from my lips and suck it. Okay?”
