Before I could dig deeper down the hole of my family history, the doorbell took me out of these thoughts. I set aside the laundry I’d been folding and took one last look around my room. Knowing Mia would be coming, I had attempted to straighten it up, clean sheets and all.

Seeing her through the peephole of the front door helped me believe again in how right two people could be for each other. “Hey you, come here. I fucking missed you.” As I pulled her into my arms and shut the door behind her, I leaned down to brush her earlobe with my lips.

“We were just together last night, remember? We did the whole Netflix and Chill vibe from my couch.” The gleeful chuckle in her voice set my heart racing. So did thoughts of what we did on the couch.

My cock already thickened and twitched. “Yeah, but when you’re not beside me or in my arms, you’re like a drug where I need a Mia fix.” I leaned down and hauled her over my shoulder, carting her off to my room, and avoided the stern glances of Gilda, the housekeeper, as we passed her in the hall.

“You’re such a brute,” Mia’s giggles echoed down the hallway.

“Tell me you don’t enjoy being carried off by me to my bed,” I dared her as I laid her carefully down on my comforter. I turned and shut the door, returning to her while pulling my t-shirt over my head.

She stopped me from covering her body with mine. “Whoa there. As much as I missed you, I don’t want to get too messy before the party. I’m already dressed, my hair is done, my makeup looks good. I want to make a good first impression. Fucking with you, I’ll get all sweaty and stuff. People will know what we did.”

“First, my family will love you, no worries. Second, we’re out here a distance away from the college, and I doubt anyone you work with is friends with the Delfinos. So I could give a fuck if they know we messed around before the party.” I nuzzled into her neck and whispered on her skin. “But fine, all I need from you is to lie here nicely with your jeans off. I’ll do all the work. You get all the satisfaction. I’m starving for a taste of you.”

I heard her breathing hitch as I moved down and tackled the buttons on her jeans with no more resistance from her. “Damn, you can be mighty persuasive, Mr. Delfino.”

“No. I can be downright demanding, Dr. Reyes. You forget I was a spoiled only child, used to getting my way. When it comes to these situations, you’ll lose to my whims and needs every time.” I tugged her black jeans and purple panties down, not bothering to remove them. They stayed pooled around her ankles and her high-heeled booties.

I flipped her around onto her stomach and knees, pulling her ass up into the air. I dove in tongue first, licking her all the way from her clit to her puckered ass and back.

“Oh fuck, Teddy. Good thing I enjoy your whims and needs, then.”

Later, as the elegant engagement party was in full swing, a four-person jazz quartet provided background music. Mia was at the forefront, the darling of the party. Everyone I introduced to her fell for her like I did. She fit right in, as if I had any doubts.

The party was typical lavish Delfino style. Held on the huge patio of cedar and limestone just out back of the main house, with the surrounding trees lit up by ambient lighting. Pale blue linen tablecloths adorned tall pub tables set about here and there. A bar carved out of ice was serviced by two bartenders, along with a buffet of shrimp, mussels, oysters and other delicacies serviced by waiters, and all of it overseen proudly by Gilda.

I left Mia chatting with Lily and Emily, confident she’d be fine without me for a few minutes as they discovered a mutual love for romance novels like the ones Lily sold in her bookstore. After using the bathroom, I meandered my way back to the party, stopping at the open bar for another beer in a chilled mug.

Competing with the chill in the air, the frosty feeling in my hand grounded me, getting my head out of the clouds about Mia and my future with her. Something about being at an engagement party for another happy couple put too many thoughts in my head about us.

When I crossed paths with Luc sitting at a tall pub table alone, he crashed some reality into me, motioning me to join him. “So, what are your plans for summer? Are you looking for work?”

Between classes, homework, and time with Mia, I’d been too busy to think ahead to summer. I had planned to find a part-time job this semester, more to keep myself busy than anything. I was doing okay for money. Between Mom and Dad’s life insurance policies and his savings I’d inherited, I didn’t have to work for now if I didn’t want to.

“I might take a few online classes over the summer, but yeah, I could find some work to keep me out of trouble.” Probably a poor choice of words on my part.

Luc glanced sharply at me. “Come work for me and I’ll keep you out of trouble. In fact, I’ve got a new restaurant we’re building up at the Steele Valley Resort. It’d be a basic laborer type of position, but you’d be up in the mountains and by the lake all summer.”

Yeah, and several hours’ drive away from Mia? No thanks, even though I’d love to take her to Steele Valley again. But we’d hardly see each other, and I didn’t want to risk anything that might create distance between her and I. But I also didn’t want Luc to think I wasn’t grateful for everything he offered me. “Can I think about it?”

“Absolutely. Let me know in a couple of weeks, okay? They’ll start hiring soon. You recall that big family trip we went on there? Fun times.”

“I seem to recall you always saying something about never marrying as we grew up. Yet, here you are, preparing for marriage number two.” I elbowed his arm beside me on the table. The thing about Luc, as much of a tough guy as he came across, he owned a soft spot for the people he cared about in his life. The way he looked at Emily inspired me.

“Yeah, well, men can change, so I’ve been told. A good woman will do that to you.” Luc smiled and nodded at Emily, who waved to him across the distance.

My eyes sought Mia across the patio. The women welcomed her into their circle with ease, like she was already family. Then it struck me, thinking of the word. To me, family meant being with people who knew you inside and out, people you could count on to be there for you through thick and thin. Mia was my family—my entire world. Right now, I couldn’t think of another person I wanted to spend my life with.

“And a baby. Here’s to the continuation of the Delfino bloodline.” I raised my glass in a salute to him, then gulped down the rest of my beer. He sipped and regarded the amber liquor swirling in his crystal glass.

“Fatherhood. I’m still baffled about it. I can only hope I’m as good as mine was.”

“I can one hundred percent affirm you will be. Angelino Delfino was amazing compared to mine. You have a good example to follow from your dad.” Envy always hit me whenever I hung around Luc and Jace growing up. Their dad was the best. Mine was okay, I guess, just a little tougher on me and lacking any sort of softness whatsoever. He was even tougher on Mom. May they both rest in peace now.

He scoffed. “Come on. Your dad was great. Uncle Thomas might have been one hard-ass motherfucker, but I can tell you—without a doubt—he loved you. He was proud of you, and he’d have done anything for you.”
