“I love you, Teddy.”

We kissed, our lips and tongues creating their own dance, while our bodies swayed under the stars to the sounds of the soft jazz. The night was magical, and love held me under its spell. A year earlier, when I started planning for my return to Glendale Falls, never in my wildest dreams did I expect to find what I found here.

The musicians eventually stopped for a break. My lips were buzzing from making out so long with her on the porch, and it was a good cue to move. “Come on. What do you say we get our body shots party started?”

I followed behind her to my room with the tray of tequila, admiring the view of her ass once again. An ass I planned to admire for a long, long time. Maybe forever, whatever the future held for us.

MIA

“We have a problem.” Barbie’s tone under her breath was not a good one, siding up to me in the office kitchen. It was late afternoon, my classes were done for the day, but some of the research papers were coming in from students. I needed coffee to sustain myself through reading them before heading home for the night.

“What’s going on?” I could tell when she wasn’t a bouncing, bubbly cartoon tiger, then something was majorly wrong.

“I think someone has found out about your relationship with Teddy. I can’t talk here. Meet me at home in an hour.” She hurried away. Her face, pale and strained like this, wasn’t a view I’d often witnessed.

I freaked out. But if there was anyone who I’d turn to in the face of a problem, especially one involving us, it was Teddy. I fired off a text.

Mia: Something bad is happening, and it’s kind of scaring me.

Teddy: Where are you?

Mia: Heading home to meet Barbie. She has something to tell me about us. I don’t know what it is.

Teddy: On my way.

I beat Barbie home. When she walked into the house and closed the door, she looked about to cry and spill the news. But she jumped out of her skin when a knock came at the door.

“It’s probably Teddy. He said he was on his way over.”

Her shoulders drooped, and she sighed. Whatever she was going to tell me really had her on edge.

Not only Teddy, but Diego walked in as well. Their scowling faces appeared ready to hurt someone. They didn’t even know what happened yet, and these guys had mine and my bestie’s back, no matter what. My heart surged full.

Teddy kissed me on the forehead. “I was hanging out with Diego, helping him load cases at the liquor distributor. He insisted on coming here with me.”

“It’s fine, guys, please have a seat and let’s talk through what happened today,” Barbie attempted to be all professional while I did mental somersaults inside.

Diego sat on the couch, but Teddy came over and took me in his arms and placed me on his lap as he sat down on the loveseat.

Barbie paced back-and-forth in the living room, chewing her nails and still not saying a word.

Diego had enough. “How about getting to it, Barbie? We need to know who we need to kill or maim. Time’s wasting, and I have a bar to get back to.”

“Well said, bro,” Teddy chipped in, giving him a fist bump.

“Fine. Mia, you know how we were texting this morning about that hip, new Boston restaurant Beau took me to? And how you made a reservation for you and Teddy to go there this weekend?”

I nodded my head in reply and gestured my hand in a rolling motion, signaling her to go on.

“Well, I was sitting at my desk working and got thirsty. So, I thought about what I wanted to drink. A soda sounded really good, but then, I was like, nah, maybe something lighter, like a tea. Okay, once I decided on tea, I had to think if I wanted it hot or cold and also sweet tea or unsweet. Maybe something with caffeine or—”

“Get to the point!” Diego yelled, sending Barbie jumping about six inches off the ground.

She dashed him a go-to-hell look and continued. “Anyway, I was gone for no more than a couple of minutes. When I returned to my desk, Karen was standing there with my phone in her hand. She was scrolling through, reading our texts. I guess I didn’t think about clearing my screen before I headed to the kitchen.”

I groaned. “I’ve told you a million times to be careful with our communication around the office.”
