But the police officer gestured into the room for her to enter. “Miss, in here, please.”

“It’s all a big misunderstanding. I’m handling it. You have nothing to worry about. Whatever they say about me, it isn’t true. I love you.” I wasn’t sure she heard the end of it, as she ducked into the room and the door slammed behind her. The entire situation tore me up, so much familiarity with the past. Only instead of Dad, Luc and Jace had my back.

When we walked out of the station, Chad was parked in front of it, nonchalantly leaning against his campus car with a shit-eating grin. “Loser,” he snickered.

Thank fuck Jace and Luc held me back before I could jump him. I was ready to give him another beating, only this time, he’d be lucky to survive.

Jace spoke up. “Is this the guy you were talking about? Buckingham’s kid?”

Luc interjected. “I’ve never known a dirtier politician than Buckingham. How is your dad, anyway? Enjoying retirement behind bars, is he?”

Chad straightened up. “You leave my dad out of this. Theo is the stalker. And I’m the one who caught him. Let’s see who comes out of this situation smelling like a rose.”

“Don’t you have a rent-a-cop meeting you’re late for at the donut shop, Chad?” Jace snarled.

“You fucking Delfinos. You’re the crooked ones, and if it takes my entire life, I’ll make sure you each go down for something. I’m watching you.” Chad pointed at us.

Jace got right up into his face, letting Chad’s pointed finger press against his chest. “Do you know who I am, mother fucker? I’m Boston PD, and I think I just heard you threaten me. Or am I hearing things?” Damn, nothing compared to seeing Jace ramp up.

Chad eyed each of us and swallowed. “No, sir.”

“That’s what I thought. Be a good little security guard and leave. Now.”

“I drove Mia here. I’ll wait to drive her home.”

I lunged toward him again. Luc caught me in time before I could do any damage. “The hell you won’t. You don’t go near Mia, understand?”

“Relax, Theo. I’ll have my car come back and get her. Chad, get the fuck out of here.” Luc’s demeanor prevailed over all of us. And that’s when I noticed the lawyer with his phone, possibly having recorded the whole thing on the sly. Perfect. I couldn’t wait to show Mia Chad’s reactions later so she could see proof what a shit he was.

Chad shifted out from under Jace’s steely stare. Once he cleared the parking lot, only when I couldn’t see his taillights down the road anymore did I feel comfortable enough to leave.

Things were plenty screwed up between Mia and I now. I could only hope that we would get through this together, and that somehow she’d still be my little rose.

MIA

Teddy’s last words, I love you, hit my ears as I ducked into a cement blocked room painted olive green. “Please have a seat. Someone will be with you shortly.” The officer gestured to an empty chair on one side of the table, then left.

I waited forever. Agonizing for at least an hour, pacing the tiny room, I worried about Teddy, and grew even more pissed at Chad. I thought about everything, trying to make sense of it all.

Earlier, I was surprised to see Chad when he had stepped into my office and told me he’d caught Teddy red-handed putting roses on cars. Of course, I couldn’t believe him.

When he told me he’d hauled Teddy to the police station to arrest him, I went ballistic, jumping up from my desk and toppling things over. I think I scared the hell out of Chad when I demanded he take me to the station at once.

In the car on the way, he had tried to turn me against Teddy. I yelled at him. “Stop talking, Chad. You have the wrong guy. He wouldn’t do this.”

“I see this a lot in my line of work. Some people can’t believe they don’t know a person as well as they think they do. Believe me, Theo is a lying, dangerous man.”

“Shut up. You don’t know what you’re talking about.” I turned away, leaning as far away from him against the car door and window as I could, and stared out.

Before I exited his car at the station, though, he told me one more thing. “You seriously need to stay away from Theo now. But it won’t be a problem once the dean, as the interim president, gets wind of this. He’ll be banned from campus until the investigation is complete, maybe forever.”

An audible gasp escaped before I could catch it. “But what about his classes? Does he lose everything that he’s already worked for this semester?”

“He could finish with online classes, that’d be up to the dean. But I’ll put my foot down against his showing his face on my campus ever again.”

Tears threatened my eyes in anger. I hated this situation. I hated Chad. But my heart ached for Teddy and what he must be going through.
