Right. There.

I cupped his ass and followed his lead. Not the greatest move in history but I couldn’t think. I could hardly breathe as he planted his head at the curve of my neck. This dance was intriguing, luring me into more. Just more.

“Don’t play those games with me if you can’t handle the fucking consequences.” He abruptly shoved off me, not giving me a second glance. A typical move. Only now, I hadn’t wanted it to end.

“What consequences?”

“Dita, I swear—” He turned around, not finishing that sentence. He shot a look over his shoulder that could kill. “Put on the damn boots. And get the fuck ready!”

Then he stomped off. For a second, I didn’t want to go anymore. If he was to lose his temper that quickly, it might’ve been wrong to stretch out the new friendzone I was in.

Nahhh.

Ares had it coming.

“Do I get to touch these?”

“Whoa, there! Hold up a second.” Ares swatted my hand away from a big, brownish snake. Its thick body coiled into a circle, and with its head somewhere tucked in between the layers, it alleviated the possible danger. “This one’s quite unpredictable.”

“Has it bitten anyone?”

“No, but it intends to from time to time.”

After looking at its improving condition, Ares locked it up again. Although Ares disputed his size—always wanting to be difficult—the snake was a giant. Most snakes they kept here were tiny, colored ones.

I fawned over those. “The little ones are so cool.”

Ares’ concentrated frown deepened into an agitated one. “That’s the exact reason we have so many of them here. People think it’s awesome. They brag about having a snake as a pet.” He opened up another cage and barked for me to get the bucket and tongs he’d set next to him on the floor earlier. He then continued, getting angrier with every word he said. “But they have no idea how to take care of them.”

I nodded, not addressing his wrath and instead curling my hand around his bicep. The tong squished the dead mouse a little too tight in my opinion. Another millimeter, and its head would pop off before the snake had a chance to pounce on it.

His grip loosened as he glanced at the place I touched. He calmed down, breathing through his nose. “It’s not a dog you pat on the nose when it pisses in your shoes, you know? They don’t come up to you, whining for a bowl of food or cuddles.”

I was intrigued by how soft-centered and protective Ares was over these reptiles. The wall around his heart had a weak spot. Maybe that was why I forgave him easily. Because I knew there were bricks that weren’t cemented so firmly. There was room to make a window so he could see past the backstabbing world he’d created in his mind.

“Yours almost seem to be,” I squeezed his tattooed muscle playfully.

Ares’ mouth tilted into a melancholic smile. “Yeah, they do, huh?”

“They like their spot on my lap.”

He snorted and absentmindedly answered, “Dita… Who wouldn’t?”

Well, you.

Oh, wow. Such thoughts should not pop into my head. I could not voice that. If I did, then I had to admit I’d liked our heated encounter way too much an hour ago, and that it had secretly gotten me wet. During the car ride over here, it had me wondering at least three times if I’d feel him on top of me ever again.

While I wore only these red rain boots.

I was fucked. He tore me up from the inside.

I shook my foot, subconsciously chastising myself for having filthy, sinful thoughts about Ares.
