She forgot I still needed to wash myself, too.

“I’m counting down the days,” I admitted, and turned the phone on speaker so I could paint my toenails in the meantime. The relaxing sound of the waves in the background told me they were at the beach.

“Only three days to go,” Mom responded. Cary’s low baritone came through in a hush. “Cary says hi.”

“Tell him “hi” back.”

A smooching sound came over the speaker. “Did you just do that with a kiss?”

This was so cute and awkward.

No, what’s awkward was me still thinking about my stepbrother’s cock in my hand and his fingers in my ass.

“Are you excited to see me?”

“Mm?”

“I asked if you’ve missed me.”

“Oh.” I giggled embarrassingly. I temporarily spaced out. Big, pierced dicks did such things. I semi-lied, “I barely realized you were gone.”

Between my new job and adjusting to this town, Ares had kept me quite busy. Mentally and physically. I hadn’t given in to him again. Once was enough. Actually, that one time shouldn’t have had happened. But it had. And now my cheeks heated. And the tingling between my thighs took me by full force.

We weren’t related by blood. But paperwork stated we were family.

My stepbrother didn’t give a shit. Hence the multiple attempts to get in my pants again through the entire week.

I heard the smile in her voice. “Oh, really?”

“I work four nights a week and Ares teaches me the ropes on how to treat snakes during the day. I’m quite busy.”

“That’s nice to hear. Seems like you he’s taken you under his wing.”

“He has.” Sorta.

“Glad to hear you’re settling in. I was worried for a while you’d have trouble finding peace after…” She clears her throat. We rarely mentioned the accident. Brain injuries and its consequences weren’t exactly light subjects. “But the new environment is doing you well.”

“It’s all working out, Mom.” Again, sorta. “And I am happy I’m getting to see you. I miss you.”

I trailed off when Ares pushed a chair in front of the egg swing. His long legs unfolded between us after he took the bottle of nail polish out of my hands and switched it with a freshly brewed mug of coffee. He’d officially pushed Rio off the breakfast chair and made himself my coffee buddy this week.

Confused, my smile matched my frown when he settled my foot on his thigh and gestured for me to continue my conversation.

Ever wondered if a person could do a one-eighty? Gone was the asshole Ares. Well, there were moments he got annoyed. As in, right now, when I asked, “When can I see you?”

Ares’ bushy brows wrinkled into a deep V.

Mom giggled. She was still so cute for her age. It sounded lovely. I really missed her and was happy their three-week honeymoon was almost over.

“Cary mentioned something about a press interview with the band Wednesday, and I want to do some laundry at Tuesday first. But I was thinking that I really want to go see your grandpa.”

Mom’s dad was still alive. Although, barely existing. He didn’t know where he was most of the time because of a slow-growing tumor pushing against his brain.

“Can I come with? The nurse tried to connect through FaceTime yesterday, but that was hardly a success.” I laugh, remembering grandpa walk around in boxer briefs and a loofah for the entire eight minutes. “I think he really likes bath time.”
