We clearly had the chemistry. As if it were two souls colliding, like he’d said. I wouldn’t say it was lust at first sight, but… something had stewed between us from the start.

Even though it meant lying in the forbidden sheets, I’d do it all over.

“Not really. But you do look pretty hot.”

“Oh, do I?”

Eyes closed to block out the now dulled ache, I still knew he smiled. “You know you do.”

“Don’t get all cute on me, Dominguez. What’s between us is real.” He softly covered my behind with his warm palm and squeezed. “Like this. Honest, raw, inexorable.”

I rubbed the spot between my eyes. “I get the impression you want to parade this physicality to something more…”

“Authentic. Yeah…” he trailed off, as if he was unsure.

This dude had so many layers. It was hard to keep up. “You really are a paradox, Ares.”

“Then this might be the time to confess I had a head injury once, too.”

“Really?” I popped my eyes open. “Clearly, I shouldn’t be so surprised.”

He bent over me and fisted my hand in his except for my index finger. He brought it over to the back of his head where there was a clear sign of a wide, thin scar.

“Does it still hurt?”

“Nah, it did when I crashed my head against the side of my pool.”

I rubbed it, examining this piece of information. It was hidden behind a thick mop of hair. I guessed no one in particular knew about this injury.

“What happened?”

“Back flip at the pool gone wrong. I was seven and thought it wouldn’t be much different than doing it on the trampoline,” he said with a tiny smile, still rubbing my forehead with his other hand. “Idiot kid. The ambulance ride was pretty fun, though.”

“Wish I could say the same,” I interjected. He tore our hands from his skull and kissed my knuckles.

It was quiet for some time. A couple minutes passed, allowing my headache to numb. The TV flickered in the darkness, illuminating our form. I turned around, stuck my nose into his abdomen and calmed my senses as I inhaled his scent.

“I can’t recall anything. But the cameras caught the entire incident.” I clutched Ares’ shirt, seeing myself fall backwards. sprawled in a weird angle at the end of the stairs. “Claudia and Rina, two women I thought were my cheerleaders, who helped me perfect my routine, were interrogated and arrested. As soon as the restraining order ended, I decided I needed to start fresh.”

“Hence, move out.”

I nodded, the tip of my nose scraping against the fabric of his shirt. “Yes. Women can be vile.” I chuckled hollowly, swallowing down the hurt I left behind and reconnected with here. “Then I met you.”

“Mortal Adonis,” he deadpanned.

I snorted. It sent a sting inside my skull. “One who could’ve drowned me the first day we met.”

He went over to my shoulders, digging the pads of his fingers into my muscles. Heaven.

“I would’ve,” he affirmed dryly, to no surprise. “But first there was that pretty face and next came your tits… Woman, you are what leaders prepare their army for.”

A laugh sputtered out of me, not even feeling an ounce offended after a typical Volt argument. “Load your guns, big boy.”

He turned off the TV and tucked my back against his front, spooning me. “You unleashed a damn beast, Dita. But I’m sure it’s nothing you can’t handle.”
