I looked at his feet. No sneakers, only socks. White ones. I tore my eyes up. Black jeans and a blood-red long-sleeved shirt. Standard wardrobe if you asked me.

Anyway, I tried to rationalize his behavior. Something was off. “A time span of two minutes, and you haven’t said something harsh yet.”

He chuckled and shook his head before pouncing on me. He grabbed my waist, lifted me up without warning. The cup of coffee fell out of my hands, spilling liquid everywhere.

This screamed Ares. No care in the world as long as he could have my legs around his waist.

“Jesus!” I laughed. “You’re relentless. You know I get without my caffeine, right?”

He hummed in my neck, and explored my skin with the tip of his nose. My hands roamed over his shoulders. Thick muscles bulged underneath while I dug my nails a little too deep.

“Ares, God,” I breathed as he fisted my hair into a ponytail and teased me endlessly. “Just kiss me.”

Hair threaded through my fingers, and my lashes fluttered against my cheek when he denied me from a kiss. I groaned, wanting to keep him steady and in place before I went to lick his lips.

He pulled back a little too soon.

That’s when I felt it. Actually, I felt nothing. Underneath the pads of my fingers, there was no scar tissue. No sign of broken skin healed back.

“Rio?” I whispered, my heart pounding heavily when it became clear the silver in his eyes was softer, less piercing.

He smiled, and he bared his teeth right when his brother growled, “Get off my girl.”

Rio stepped back, still keeping one hand on my knee. When his heavy footfalls walked over, he accused Ares, “I knew it.”

I swallowed, seeing Rio’s hand linger before training my gaze on Ares. He was furious, ready to throw gasoline onto his brother’s head and light him on fire.

“The fuck?” Ares spat into Rio’s face and slapped his hand off me. “The fuck were you thinking?”

Rio flicked Ares’ nose in that annoying brotherly way. Ares squinted his eyes and bounced back.

“You two fucking, huh?” Rio’s toothpaste smile stayed intact.

“No, we’re just about to plan another fucking tea party. I just had my dolls nicely lined up,” Ares raged on. “Of course, we’re fucking! What the hell, Rio?”

I crossed my legs and hugged my waist, growing unsure when Ares so bluntly told his brother we were casually involved.

Rio’s mouth twisted into pretend sorrow. “Oops, my bad.”

“Get out of my face,” Ares threatened. “And out of hers too, if you will.”

“Fine, fine. Like a kicked puppy, see?” He sucked in his butt as if his tail was between his legs. “Just don’t come crying to me, little brother.”

Ares scrunched his face. “The fuck is he talking about?” He turned to me and unfolded my arms. “He always thinks he’s so clever because he could breathe so damn easily at birth.”

“What?” I let him pull me against him. It instantly felt so different from the person standing in front of me earlier. His smell, the way he embraced me. Like home.

“Nothing,” he said, and buried his face in my neck. “Come back upstairs.”

“But, this mess.” I pointed out the coffee, soaking Ares’s socks.

“It will get cleaned up.” He looked at me, weaving a lock of hair around his finger. “I’m sad. I need my fix.”

I smiled. I knew exactly what this man’s fix consisted off.

Once upstairs, he placed me in front of his bed and stood two steps back. His lip twitched pensively.

“You want to do me a favor?”
