I snorted. I wasn’t the only one realizing how wrong that word choice was.

“Fancy, rockstar. Hope you pay your roadies generously to live up to your beck-and-call standards,” I said, deciding to let his slip-up slide since Dita trusted Cary more than me at the moment. If I was cautious enough, I could go through him to mend my relationship with her.

Cary heavily exhaled, obviously biting his tongue. He leaned against the kitchen island, watching me as I dived into the liquor cabinet. Cognac. Getting a whole lot of drunk tonight was my only option to keep myself from pounding on her door.

We toasted, and I tipped it back before pouring myself another two or four fingers. Cary raised a brow, watching me as he sipped his and winced.

“Never liked this stuff.”

I drily huffed through my nose, staring at the insides of another empty glass. “Kinda hard to snort.”

“Funny,” Cary deadpanned, twirling the glass between his fingers. The friction with the marble produced a scratchy sound, ending it in one long woosh as he slid his empty glass over to me. “You know what? If we’re goin’ to talk ‘bout Portia, I sure a shit needed another one of these,” he drawled.

I obliged and shoved it back to him like a modern saloon bartender, my eyes still shooting at him like a blazing gun.

“I was never good enough for her.”

“Guess we’re diving straight in,” I murmured, not nearly feeling the alcohol enough to get this over with.

Cary sighed. “You want to become a better man? To resolve this?”

I glared at him and waited, not entirely ready to satisfy him with a response. But I nodded curtly when his head tilted, tired of tiptoeing around each other.

There. Everybody happy?

“Good. Then listen to the guy who had no choice but to try.”

“Where to start?” I licked a drop from the rim of the glass. “Oh, when you fell over your imaginary shoelaces and into a pile of white powder? Or no, wait… it was your dick into—”

“Enough, Ares!” Cary slammed his fist onto the surface, cutting me off with a tone so authoritative, it temporarily stunned me.

“Look, Cary. I needed this guy when I was fucking fifteen and lost my virginity to the then hired thirty-two-year-old nanny because she, at least, wanted a piece of me.” I rounded the island and paused beside him, shoulder to shoulder. Almost nose to nose too, I was that wound up. “Or on my seventeenth birthday so I could confide in you that I went to seeherwithout your or the judge’s permission.”

He searched my eyes, wondering who I referred to. When realization dawned on him, he echoed, “You went to see her? Portia?”

I nodded. “I did. You wanna know what she said when I barged into her office?”

He didn’t answer, but I saw the curiosity faze him.

“She wondered how I got through security.”

I hadn’t been allowed in there. She never wanted to see another Volt in her entire lifetime again. Her boys included. Days, weeks, hell… years I mulled over why she wanted to forget about us. Because that’s what it was. She just wanted to wipe away the history of her previous life. Forget about the children she’d raised. About the twins she’d held warm in her womb.

I shakily breathed, as if the bruises on my heart were poked at with a candent coal poker. “You wanna know what else?”

Cary gritted his teeth while his large palm snaked onto my shoulder. He fisted my shirt so hard, the skin he simultaneously pinched bordered on pain. It wasn’t until then that I realized my throat hurt from holding myself back from crying.

Cary saw me. He finally saw me. His son, and the pain I’d tried to bury, to no avail.

I’d grieved Mom. I still did to some extent. Even if she played dead to her family. She just didn’t want to be a part of me and Rio anymore.

And it hurt.

It hurt so badly.

Another hand came upon the back of my head, Cary wanted to keep me together. “Tell me. It’s okay.”

“It’s not okay, Cary!” I lost my temper, wrenching myself out of his hold. The long hairs on my head twisted between my fingers, almost pulling it out of my skull. “I still see the look on her face. I’m not her kid. I ain’t anything to her.”
