Gina and I watched the stars lying on a scratchy wool blanket. Teenagers in love, that was what we were. She was the Italian girl who fell in love with one of two black boys on the street. Who would have imagined that we’d be the perfect couple living in our perfect world?
“Jamie.” Gina rolled over on top of me. Her bright amber eyes stared into mine. Her dark brown hair, soft and smelled of melons, curtained our faces.
“Yeah, babe.” I hoped when we got older we’d still be like this, no cares, and not afraid to love.
“You love me?” She asked, and I tried not to laugh because she was serious. She needed to know I was all in with her.
She had asked me this question a million times a day, and though I didn’t know how else to show her other than the things I did, nothing ever compared to the words.
“I do. I love you so much. You’re my one in a million.” I waited for the reassuring smile she’d give me when her heart filled enough to understand that I meant it. “For now, and always.”
