“Lucas, can I talk to you for a moment?” I say.

“Sure!” He comes over and sits next to me on Andre’s futon.

“How do you feel if I asked your mom to marry me?” I am not sure if he’ll understand. I still want his blessing either way.

“I think she’d like that. Would that make you my dad?” His eyes too wise for his own good shine up at me.

“I could never take the place of your father. Maybe I could be a close second if you’d let me. Kind of like your mom’s backup, you know when you’re playing a fighting game, and they let you tag in a friend to help?”

“Like in wrestling?” he asks.

“Kind of like that. If you need something and your mom can’t help, I’d be there for you.”

“Will we live together?”

“I hope so,” I admit.

“Can we live here? Your house is bigger than ours.”

Andre chuckles, and I work hard to keep the smile from my face. “We’ll talk to your mom about it. You’ll have to keep this a secret until I ask her, though. We don’t want to ruin the surprise.” I study him, making sure he understands.

“Okay. Mom said some secrets are good, and some are bad. I think this is good. Will there be ice cream?”

“You bet.”

I swear every time I am around this kid; he makes me want to give him the world. I wonder for a second what having a child with Gina would be like. Would they look more like me than her? How quickly would she tire of me listening to the baby in her stomach? I assume Lucas was a perfect blend of her and his father. He looks like her, but he doesn’t. I’d never seen his father, but you can’t deny he is Gina’s son.

We go back to playing video games, and Gina calls us down for breakfast just as Lucas kicks our butt in a race car challenge.

Sitting at the table, I take a minute to savor the four of us eating together. This is my family, and I am happy to be home with them.

I’d got a small yacht used for private dinners for the night. I insisted she wear a nice dress. When we arrive, the dining area is lit with candles, as I’d requested. I am patient. We tour the boat, eat a lamb chop dinner, and watch the waves as we sail.

Beautiful in a blue wrap dress, the scenery is perfect for the occasion. She is holding her half-filled wine glass and giving me looks I can’t yet decipher.

“Gina, I know our relationship is still new. Aside from me having to leave, I’ve enjoyed these past few weeks with you. We’ve both fallen back into our old feelings with the new twists. I love you so much, and you know I adore Lucas. I love to make us official by making you, my wife.”

Tears glisten in her eyes, like diamonds in the sky. “I need to make sure that Lucas is okay with this.”

“No need. I asked for his blessings before I asked you. He just wants to move into my house and get some ice cream too.”

Gina smiles big, wraps her arms around my neck, and kisses me intensely.

I let her have her fill before I pull out the ring from my pocket. I lower to one knee and look up at her. “Marry me, baby? We already know that you’re my one in a million. Make me the happiest man in the world today and be mine.”

“On one condition…”

There is something off about her look. Is she nervous? I am the one on bended knee. Why is she nervous?

“You’ll be okay with the fact that I’m pregnant?”

“I want a family. When it’s time, I’ll be ready.” I kiss her hands, waiting for my response.

“Now is the time, sweetheart. I’m saying that I’m pregnant.”

“Oh.” I chuckle. “You meant…” I feel foolish thinking back on it. “So we’re having a baby and getting married?”
