Caught in my musings, I blink, having missed the beginning of her question. She shakes her head with a smile and repeats herself.

“Would you like to go riding when we return? Or do you have other plans for us?”

“Riding horses or me?” I respond with a smug smirk.

Her laughter rings in the air. Eyes twinkle with mirth.

“Oh, Luc, you’re so devilish. Horses!”

I lean forward and murmur in a deeper voice, “Can I help it if you drive me wild like a stallion, Ma Chérie? Every moment we’re together, I want to pound into your tight, wet pussy until you beg me for no more orgasms and collapse sated in my arms.”

The rosy stain on her cheeks darkens to crimson. The tip of her tongue darts out to moisten her lush lips before her teeth drag the lower one into her mouth.

My cock thumps against the zipper of my trousers. With a groan, I use the pad of my thumb to free her lip. I slant my mouth over hers and delve my tongue inside to lap at hers. Hungrily, I swallow her moans as my fingers trail up the inside of her thigh, exposed by the slit in her dress. My mouth moves across her cheek to the delicate shell of her ear.

“But if you prefer a horse, we can go for a ride. Whatever you want, Ma Petite Fille.”

She shivers from my warm breath and moans softly.

“Perhaps we can ride tomorrow morning after breakfast.”

I chuckle wickedly and signal to the server for the check.

Over the next few days, we ride as she requested—and as I do—and explore more areas of the château and Blois. On our way from my suite of rooms, we encounter a maid leaving the opposite wing. Blair glances up at me, and I brace myself for the question in her eyes.

“We haven’t gone there yet. What’s in that wing?”

Even though I prepared myself, my heart still clenches in my chest as my lungs fight for air. I close my eyes to regain my composure.

“Oh, Luc, I didn’t mean to upset you. No need to answer, I understand. Let’s go for a walk in the garden. Get some fresh air. It’s a beautiful day. No need for us to stay cooped up inside,” she says as she tugs my hand and heads towards the staircase.

I follow with my heart filling with grief.

As we reach the top of the staircase, my gaze drifts to the opposite hallway. Images flicker in my mind’s eye. I see Carole laughing as she walks towards our bedroom suite after the Annual Château de Blois Gala. Another time in the nursery with her pregnant folding new clothes for Lucas we purchased in Blois. I stop and shake my head.

Enough.

“Come, Blair. Let me show you the primary residence wing.”

She glances up at me from the first stair. Her mouth opens to protest. But I squeeze her hand and tug her back beside me. She nods.

As we walk, I chide myself. If I want Blair in my life, I can no longer ignore areas in my homes I occupied with Carole or planned for Lucas. Just as Blair deserves all of me, she should have full access to all parts of my residences and move about them with ease. We will make our fresh memories. Not to replace the old ones I’ll always cherish. Rather, to further our relationship. Satisfied with my decision, I pause outside a closed door.

“This was the nursery,” I say as I turn the knob. “I changed it to a sitting room.”

Blair hesitates and glances at me.

I gesture for her to enter ahead of me. She nods and steps inside.

“It has a lovely view of the French garden. The balcony makes for a peaceful spot for morning tea or a glass of cognac in the evening.”

I cross the room and open the doors.

The fragrance of flowers drift in on the breeze. I inhale deeply to clear the last sad thoughts from my mind. A smile spreads across my face at the delicate touch of Blair’s hand on my forearm. I slip my arm around her shoulders and tuck her into my side. Kissing the top of her head, I close my eyes, thankful for her in my once empty life.

We spend a moment in silence watching hummingbirds flit amongst the colorful flowers. The rapid beat of their wings race in time with my heart. The pace slows the longer I hold Blair close to me. She soothes my soul.

“Come, let me show you the rest of the wing.”
