I laugh. “I can imagine.”

Annie calls for her daughter from inside the house, and Jenna just rolls her eyes and sighs.

Since I can see I should probably go, I say, “It’s alright. I better get back to work.”

“Okay.” She nods. “Don’t be a stranger, okay? Oh, if you see my brother, tell him to come get his mother.”

Chapter Nine

Jenna

“What could you possibly want?” I ask, walking into the house. “What could you and I possibly have left to say to each other after all this quality time we’ve spent together the past few days?”

The first day went well, but my momma and I have butted heads almost constantly after that. I’m sure it’s because I’ve become even more bitter and crabby. Because of that fact, I told her she didn’t have to come over so often.

But apparently, her sense of self-preservation isn’t all that high because she just keeps showing up. She should just leave me alone to wallow in my own self-pity. It’d make it so much easier on both of us.

She looks at me and sighs. “Do you have to be so over the top?”

“Me? Over the top?” I stammer. “You just came outside to tell me to take a shower! In front of other people!”

She waves her hand as though it’s no big deal. “It’s just Shane. I’ve known him ever since he was a baby.”

“Momma, you’ve knowneveryonein this town since they were babies.” And that’s the truth. Annie Mitchell has been a surrogate mother, aunt, or sister to practically everyone in Grady.

She says, “Besides, I’m sure Shane didn’t think anything of it. He was always such a sweet boy, and now, he’s turned into a fine young man.”

She’s right about that. Well, I guess I don’t know him all that well anymore, but he sure as hell is a fine-lookingman. Holy shit, Shane got hot.

Back in high school, he was always cute, but more in a boyish sort of way. Now, he looks like he could bring any woman in town to her knees.

Or maybe it’s just me thinking about getting on my knees for him.

Whatever. I’m okay with that.

Mental images of Shane flash through my mind. He’s a little taller than I remember. We were about the same height back in high school, but now, he might be an inch or two taller than me.

I could see his chestnut-colored hair hanging out the bottom of his baseball cap. And his blue eyes stared back at mine, a few shades darker than my own.

And his body? Holy hell, that body!

Working on the ranch has done him some good. His chest is big and sturdy, along with his stomach. Although I couldn’t see if his abs were defined, I would guess they’re hard either way.

And my favorite part? His big biceps, which are barely contained by the sleeves of his t-shirt. Those biceps lead down to his forearms which are roped with veins.

I can’t help but wonder what it would feel like to be wrapped in those large arms. Quickly, though, I try to shake it off. As amazing as a good fuck sounds, I’m not sure it would do anything to help me get my head on straight.

Besides, I’m pretty sure that he wouldn’t be interested in the gimp who apparently doesn’t take a shower—which reminds me of the fact that I’m supposed to be mad at my momma.

My eyes glare at her once again, but something suddenly dawns on me.

I suck the air between my teeth before asking, “Momma, are you trying to fix me up with Shane?”

Maybe that sounds ridiculous, but I know how this woman thinks.

She looks back at me. “No, I’m not. I don’t think you guys would be good together.”

Didn’t she just get done telling me how great of a guy Shane is?
