“Hello?” My responsible brother answers on the first ring.

“Joe, I need you to come over.”

“Why?”

“I fell, and I can’t get up.”

“Are you okay?” He asks frantically.

“I’m fine. Just hurry.”

Before he can say anything else, I hang up and impatiently wait. The water still runs over me, and I pray the hot water keeps flowing. Not wanting my brother to see me completely naked, I grab the towel and get ready to cover myself with it.

After what seems like an eternity, I finally hear the back door open.

“Hello?” Jonas calls.

I can barely hear him, but I scream that I’m in the bathroom. I grab the towel and cover myself the best I can.

A moment later, the door swings open, and relief washes over me, but when I peek around the curtain to see my brother, my jaw drops. It’s not Jonas standing there. Nope. It’s none other than Shane Mcpherson.

Chapter Ten

Shane

Just when I’m about to head home for the day, I run into Jonas. He’s got a worried look on his face, so I stop to ask him what’s wrong.

He takes off his hat and runs his fingers through his hair. “Jenna called and said she needs some help. I guess she fell. But right after, Andi called and said Callie busted her head open on the coffee table.”

“Shit, man, is there is something in the air?”

He pulls out his phone. “I have to call someone to go help Jenna since Callie might need stitches.”

Without even thinking about what I’m doing, I say, “I’ll go help Jenna.”

His eyes look up at me. “Really?”

“Yeah, no problem. I pass by there on my way to my truck anyway.”

“Thanks, man,” he says, turning to head back toward his house.

I can’t believe I volunteered myself for this. I”m supposed to have a date in a little while. But I don’t want to leave Jenna—or her brother—hanging.

Quickly, I jog toward the guest house the youngest Mitchell is staying in. I’m assuming her momma left, and that’s why she called Jonas for help.

It only takes a couple of minutes before I hop up the steps onto the back deck. Thankfully, the back door is unlocked when I try the doorknob.

Once I’m inside, I call out to see where she is. The voice is muffled, but I follow it the best I can.

I stop outside what I assume is the bathroom and pause for a moment. Whatever is waiting for me on the other side of this door could be all kinds of awkward. Then again, she might be hurt, so fuck it.

I swing open the door, and steam comes bellowing out. When I step in, my eyes glance around, and I see the shower curtain half-open and Jenna reaching for a towel to cover herself.

When she sees me, her eyes go wide. “Shane?!” She cries. “Where’s my brother?”

Averting my eyes, I say, “His daughter fell and cracked her head open, so he sent me.”

“Oh,” she mutters. “Well, this might be stating the obvious, but I’m naked.”
