Dear lord, I’m making this even more uncomfortable.

“Do you have a boyfriend?” He asks.

“I did, but he started cheating on me when I got this.” I gesture to my leg.

“What an ass! I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t let a silly ol’ cast get in the way of pleasing my woman.” The way he says those words make me wonder how exactly he pleases women.

“I don’t think it was that. Well, it wasn’tonlythat. It was more that he didn’t want to deal with my shitty mood that came from the whole situation.

He takes another sip of coffee. “Well, that might be even worse. You don’t leave the people you care about when they need you the most.”

“Yeah, well, I guess he missed the memo,” I mutter.

This time, he’s the one who changes the subject. “So, how are things between you and your momma? Things seemed a little tense when I was here earlier.”

“Oh, we’re fine. I mean, she drives me nuts, but that’s nothing new.”

“Fair enough,” he says with a warm smile.

We spend the next few minutes just catching up. It’s nice, and for the first time in weeks, I’m not solely focused on my injury or what it means for my future. I actually feel a slight twinge of something besides sadness.

But just when I find myself starting to smile a bit more, the dryer dings.

Chapter Twelve

Shane

“Shane?”

The cute girlie voice pulls me out of my thoughts. My eyes glance up to the petite redhead sitting across the table from me.

It's our first date after talking on the phone and over text messages for the past few weeks. She’s cute as hell, but I wonder if maybe she’s trying too hard. She’s got a decent amount of makeup on, which I don’t mind. A woman can wear whatever the hell she likes on her face. But she keeps messing with her fake eyelashes like they’re bothering her. And although I think that body of hers looks great in that dress, and it’s doing wonders for her tits, it’s so tight she keeps moving around like she’s struggling to breathe. I’d rather a woman be comfortable than try to dress up for me. I’m not a hard man to impress.

Anna and I are having a good time at dinner, but I can’t help but feel guilty. I’m on a date with a sweet girl, yet I can’t stop thinking about Jenna.

Ever since I spent time with her yesterday, she’s become a permanent fixture in my mind. And not just because I saw her half-naked, although I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t a fun perk.

It was more about the connection I thought we had. True, we didn’t spend a ton of time together, but I felt like she was easy to talk to in the time we did have. It was like we were old friends when in reality, I just had a crush on her from afar.

Anna repeats my name as she attempts to pull me from my thoughts.

“Sorry,” I reply. “What were we talking about?”

Her face falls a little. “Are you okay? You seem distracted.”

“I’m sorry. Just a long day at work. That’s all.”

“That’s actually what I was asking you about. I was asking how long you’ve been at the ranch.”

“About six months now,” I reply.

“Do you like it?” She asks, sipping her water and picking at her salad.

“It’s alright, I guess. The pay is good, and it’s honest work. But I don’t know that it’s my dream job.”

“What’s the dream?” She smiles at me.

“Just something I can call my own. Maybe have my own little farm or something.” I don’t go into detail about how I technically already own a house. I don’t feel like talking about it.
