“For putting up with me—all of me. Even the broken parts.”

“I don’t see any broken parts,” he whispers. “From where I sit, you’re still my dream girl.”

I can’t but smile at how lucky I am.

He surprises me when he stands up and holds out his hand. Even though I have no idea what we are doing, I take it anyway.

Gently, he pulls me to my feet and leads me out into the middle of the dance floor. We are the only ones out there, and I’m sure we’re attracting some attention.

“People are staring, aren’t they?” I ask.

“Let them stare,” he says. “They’re just jealous that I’m dancing with the prettiest girl in town.”

The room is so loud that we can barely hear the music, so Shane hums something for us to sway to. He gently holds me up so I’m not putting any extra pressure or weight on my foot.

At this moment, it doesn’t matter that people are watching and whispering. It doesn’t matter that I have a giant cast on my leg that drives me insane.

All that matters is us two.

All of the bad stuff fades as I get lost in the moment.

I have no idea how long we dance, but I know I’m ready to be alone with him.

Pulling him closer, I whisper, “Take me home, Shane.”

Chapter Twenty-nine

Shane

Less than an hour later, we are back at Jenna’s place. The moment we hit the door, I lead her to the bedroom, but much to the dismay of my dick, I don’t plan on fucking her.

She seems much too exhausted—physically and mentally—for that. Instead, I plan to hold her and do whatever else I can to show her that I’m there for her no matter what.

We stand at the foot of the bed, and I reach behind her to unzip the back of her dress. Once it’s open, I grab either strap and pull them down her arms until gravity takes over and it falls to the floor.

Walking over to her dresser, I pull open each drawer until I find the one with t-shirts, and I grab a loose-fitting one.

When I get back to her, instinctively, my eyes flick down to her breasts. She’s wearing a regular bra instead of her typical sports bra, and her large mounds are spilling out the top of the cups. As much as I want to play with them, I resist once again. This isn’t about me.

I reach behind her again, this time to unhook the bra. It follows the dress, falling down her arms and landing on the floor.

Next, I pull the t-shirt on over her head.

Jenna hasn’t said a word this entire time. She looks like, although she’s tired, her mind is still running at full speed, and she’s trapped inside her thoughts.

Once she’s in the t-shirt, I lead her over to the bed and get her comfortable under the plush blankets. When she’s situated, I strip down to my boxers and join her. I slide in next to her, and immediately, she nestles into my chest. Holding her close, I stroke her hair while we sit in silence. The only noise between us is the steady sound of our breathing.

It’s so peaceful that I’m almost startled when Jenna speaks, breaking the silence.

“I’m sorry,” she says in barely more than a whisper.

My eyes glance down to look at her, but I only see the top of her head. “What in the world are you sorry for?”

“I feel like I ruined our evening. It was like our first official date, and I got all depressed and messed everything up.”

“Alright, Sunshine, look at me. I’m going to need you to hear me when I say this.”

When her eyes meet mine, they seem to sparkle a little less than usual.
