Oh yeah, my boner is definitely gone.

I figure she’s out here looking for one of her sons, but she makes a B-Line straight for me.

When she reaches me, in her thick Southern accent, she says, “Hey there, Shane. You’re just the man I wanted to talk to.”

“Afternoon, Mrs. Mitchell,” I tip my hat to her.

“Please call me Annie.”

“Okay, Annie,” I reply with a nervous smile. “What can I do for you?”

“I hear you’re dating my daughter.” Wow, she wastes no time.

“Uhh…” I’m not sure how much Jenna wants her mom to know, so I’m not sure quite how to respond.

Luckily, she keeps talking, so I don’t have to.

“I already know you are. Jenna’s brothers all have big mouths. The truth is I’m happy you and Jenna are seeing each other.”

I raise my eyebrows. “Really?”

“Really. I’m thrilled.”

“Okay, then,” I say with a smile.

“But,” she says.

And there’s the other shoe about to drop.

She continues. “If you’re going to date Jenna, that means you can’t avoid this big ol’ family of ours.”

“Oh, I’m not trying to avoid you,” I interrupt, but she cuts me off just as quick.

“Shane, I’m under no delusions that it’s been your idea to keep your distance. Without a doubt, I know that it was my daughter. Jenna has always kept her personal life somewhat private, but I also know she seems to care about you. A lot.”

I can’t help but smile. “I care about her too—more than you know.”

That gets her to smile back at me. “That’s why I’m here. Jenna’s brothers and I are always going to be protective of her. That being said, we’d like to spend some time with the both of you.”

“Okay, when?” I ask.

“Tonight,” she replies matter-of-factly. “You can come to Sunday night dinner.”

“Oh, uhm…” I stutter.

“Darlin’, you might as well bite the bullet and get it over with.”

“Have you talked to Jenna?” I ask.

“No, I know my daughter would make some silly excuse about how you couldn’t come because of how busy you are. I’m sure she thinks she’s saving you from being put on the spot, but the fact of the matter is that you’re going to have to get used to us if you’re going to continue dating Jenna.”

She has a point. And although I’m sure Jenna was trying to save me from the inevitable third-degree, I’m sure I can handle myself. Besides, I already work around one of her brothers almost every day. I’ll be fine.

“Okay, sure,” I say. “Dinner sounds great.”

“Perfect.” She grins and tucks her shoulder-length hair behind her ear. “Jenna will fill you in on all the details.”

She turns to walk away, and once she’s gone, I pull out my phone and send another text to Jenna.
