I hang out with Grandpa for a good chunk of the day. Since I’m still hesitant about this retirement home he wants to go to, he insists that we check it out.

Overall, it seems like a nice place. It’s strange thinking of my grandpa calling this place ‘home’, but I guess if it makes him happy, who am I to argue?

Jenna occupies my mind the whole day. We text off and on, but she’s at work, so I try not to bug her too much. She loves her new job so much, and it’s fantastic to see her so happy.

And she has been more than amazing in being there for me since Grandma died. I don’t know what I would have done without her.

Once we are back home, I walk into the bathroom and see all of Jenna’s face products sitting on the sink. I can’t help but smile just thinking about her. I love that she feels comfortable enough to feel a little bit at home. I wonder how she would feel about making the move permanent. But questions plague my thoughts.

Is it too soon?

What if she’s not ready?

What if she doesn’t want to live here with me?

But I push all of those questions out of my head because Grandpa’s right. Life is too short to keep wondering.

What harm would it do to ask?

Chapter Forty-seven

Jenna

“Jenna,” Gwen calls my name as she walks into the stockroom in the back of the bookstore. “There’s someone here to see you.”

“Who is it?” I ask, only half paying attention because I assume it’s either Shane or one of my family members.

“No idea,” she replies.

That gets my attention. I stop pricing the books that just came in and made my way out to the front of the store.

Gwen calls after me, “Why don’t you go ahead and take lunch, and I’ll finish up back here?”

Gwen is the best boss I could possibly ask for, and she and I have a ton of fun working together. This job seems to be just what I needed to get my mind back on the right track.

Well, that and the pills. I hate to admit that they’re working, but I’m starting to feel more like myself than I have in years.

When I reach the front of the store, I stop dead in my tracks. There standing before me is Coach Smith.

“Coach?” I ask.

“Jenna!” She smiles.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I rush over to her and hug her.

“I came to see you! For this being such a small town, you’re a hard person to track down.”

“How’d you know I was here?” I ask.

“Well, the address we had on file sent me to your mom’s, but she gave me the address of the place you’ve been staying. When you weren’t home, one of your brothers noticed me looking lost and told me where to find you. By the way, are all of you Mitchell’s tall and built? You’re like a bunch of Clydesdales.”

We both start laughing, and I answer, “Pretty much. Do you want to go grab a bite to eat?”

“Heck yes, let’s go!”

I lead her out of the book store, and we walk over to the town diner. When we are seated, Coach looks over the menu.

She mutters, “So many things covered in gravy.”
