“He lost something other than his memories?” she inquired.

So he has truly gotten his memories back?

“What does he plan to do then?” Mrs. Wolfe asked.

“So what would you have me do to help?” she asked.

“Alright, I’ll notify my people,” she said.

“Whatwouldyou do without me?” she retorted. “I’m just satisfied watching over you.”

“Also, I’m calling off the suitor thing,” she said.

I was surprised at that statement. What did she mean she was calling it off?

“Yeah, I am,” she confirmed.

“Well, let’s say I’m just leveling the playing field,” she replied.

The playing field?

“Don’t worry about it, sweetie. Just be sure to stay by Nick’s side when the time comes,” she advised.

She dropped the phone in her purse and turned to me. The smile on her face was not wavering.

“Well, what do you know?” she asked. “Your little brother is coming over tomorrow.”

“He’s not my little brother. He’s the older one,” I retorted.

“I see. Oh well, get your suit ready,” she said. “Maybe you two can have dinner together.”

“I’ll have his head on a platter,” I folded my arms. “That would end things quickly.”

“You don’t have permission to kill him,” she giggled.

“Who?”

She didn’t reply, but there was a glint in her eyes. I hate the smile she wore.

“What do you want me to do then?” I was pissed.

“Like I said, this is the time when you need to switch places with him,” she replied. “Not everything is solved by senseless violence and bloodshed.”

“But I have no idea what he intends to do here,” I said. “I need to slow him down at least, or else he might just overtake me while I sit there playing hooky.”

“You don’t have to worry about that. I’ll find out what it is he wants,” she said confidently. “You forget that I have an inside man in the form of a sweet, adorable daughter and his lover.”

I don’t know if it was a good idea to misuse a family member’s trust in a way to manipulate them. I realized I had no right to complain as I had misused my brother’s trust.

“Are you second-guessing this? I hope you’re not under the impression that I’m abusing my daughter’s trust?” she asked.

“I am not second-guessing anything,” I replied.

“Good because unlike you, I don’t plan to kill her or have her in an accident prompting memory loss,” she said with venom in her tone while wearing a carefree smile. “Indeed. My actions are meant to assist my daughter, who has issues falling in love and settling down.”

I couldn't be with this woman. The ability to stab me with her words while sounding both hypocritical and on my side at the same time. I don’t know why but I was glad that I wasn’t her enemy or anything.

“Well, with that said and done, we need you to get to Myrtle Beach in two days,” she instructed. “I’ll have you memorize the staff there.”
