“Meaning.”

“Told him I think I love him. That…well, that IthoughtI did.”

“Make it official. That’s a great way to respond to something like this.” Angelina snagged my hand. “He gave up some serious man card points with this stunt.”

I laughed. Between him and Hunter, they were always jawing about man cards. Now I kind of understood.

“Go with what your heart says.” Lizzie tapped my shoulder three times. “It won’t be wrong.”

My new friends, who’d both seen some serious ugliness in their lives, were beating their issues.

I could, too. “Okay. Go get the leather.”

Chapter Thirty-Three

Drey

Myphonebuzzedinmy front pocket as I locked the front door of the store. Snow fell in such a thick blanket I couldn’t see the end of the parking lot.

After I clicked the final lock, I dug out the phone to see it was a text from Sarah.

With Angelina’s help, hopefully she’d gotten my little song dedication. Cheesy, yeah, but hell, Sarah deserved that for a—

Holy shit!

A picture of Sarah, wearing a body-hugging bodice and tight leather pants, streamed across my screen. She had some makeup on, less than what she normally wore, but her lips, they were done up bright red, and she hooked her forefinger on the tip of the bodice.

SARAH: Thanks for the song.

In an instant, my body heated up. I was sure the snow was melting before it even touched my skin. Hell, before it hit my leather jacket.

I took off up the sidewalk, keeping my screen in sight. I couldn’t believe that was her. Damn she was sexy, beautiful, but whoa, in that black leather…

I checked the time. It was after one in the morning. There was no way I could still meet up with her. She had the night off and was hanging out with Angelina and Lizzie but was probably at home by now. Wait, she’d just sent the text.

ME: Can I stop by?

SARAH: Was hoping you’d ask. I’m at home.

ME: Wearing the leather?

Damn my fingers were shaking, and it wasn’t from the cold, either.

SARAH: Yes.

I sprinted in the direction of her place, my body tightening with each step. The song wasn’t dedicated with hopes ofgetting some, so I wasn’t sure I should head to her apartment, but that didn’t stop me moving toward Sarah’s place. To be close to her would be enough…for now.

It’d been a few weeks since she told me about her past, and I’d done a couple things to woo her, like leaving a single rose on her doorstep and putting a small box of chocolates in her locker at work. How she beamed with each gift made me want to do more and more.

It’d become my mission. If only I had a few more resources, I could afford nicer things, but hopefully the thought counted.

And it looked like it did.

Maybe she’d let me spend the night. Just holding her…without a knife nearby. I let out a laugh. Damn I loved this girl. I wanted to—

“Drey,” a raspy voice called out to me from the alley between the video store and Sarah’s place.

A tall figure stumbled out from the darkness and fell forward. Bare, skinny hands darted out to break her fall. An audible crack sounded followed by a high-pitched cry.
