“Then explain the bruises on your face and the reported broken ribs Gabs.”

“Bruised not broken,” she corrected but at Haley’s urgings, she admitted the truth. “I was attacked, by Donald.”

“Donald?” Haley gasped. “How?”

“I guess he finally figured it out Hales. He wanted to know where you and Jess were but when I refused to tell him he gotpissed and slammed my head into the car. I’m fine Hales, please don’t cry,” she whispered.

“I’m coming back. I’ll tell Wyatt everything…”

“Hales, no, right now the entire city thinks I was mugged, no one’s looking at Donald. If it weren’t for the money I’d go to the police and tell them, but I know Wyatt would figure it out, he’s not stupid. I already knew what Donald was capable of, but now more than ever, you have to stay away. Promise me Haley. I want the words to come out of your mouth Sis. Promise me you will not come back until I know it’s safe for both of you.”

“I promise,” Haley said and Gabby could hear the tears in her voice.

“When’s Jess’ next surgery?” she asked.

“Two weeks, she’s only had two seizures in the past two months…I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done. I just wish it hadn’t gone this far.”

“I love you and Jessica, and I’d do anything for you. I’m okay, I’m pretty sure Wyatt’s not going to let me go anywhere from now on without a security team so our conversations will have to be short, but at least I’ll be safe from Donald. He won’t strike if he knows someone can connect him to me, it’d raise too many questions.”

“I love you too, Gabs. Please be safe.”

“Always,” she said hanging up. She just hoped she could get things set up so her sister could come home. She needed her because things here with Wyatt had gotten ten times more complicated. She could handle his antagonism but his gentleness with her the past two days scared her more than his anger on their wedding night…she could begin to fall for the gentle side of him and then he’d have access to all of her secrets.

By the end of the week Wyatt managed to get everyone out of the house, it’d been hell on both of them pretending to be a regular couple while their families looked on, but it allowedGabby time to put her new plan in motion. She reworked the trail, putting in the slightest hint of where part of the money went. That night Wyatt asked her the same question he’d asked daily since the confrontation in the conference room and she tossed out the nugget for him to catch hold.

“Really Wyatt? You’re honestly asking thisagain?”

“Damn it Gabby just tell me the truth, where is my money?”

“It’s gone; how many times do I have to tell you the same thing?”

“There is no way you spent that much money Gabby, not in that short amount of time, and have nothing to show for it.”

“Maybe I didn’t spend it all on me?” she suggested. “Come on Wyatt, I wasn’t theonlyone expanding their operations at that time.”

“What is that supposed to mean Gabby? Who are you sharing the money with?” he demanded.

“You mean your computer whiz hasn’t figured it out yet?” she said airily. “Maybe he’s not worth the price you pay him after all.”

“What did you do Gabby?”

“What didn’t I do?” she teased. “Perhaps you should see who else would have benefited from the company going down?”

“You stole my money for one of our competitors?”

“Maybe…”

“Who were you working with?” he asked harshly.

“It wasn’t exactly working with them…more like giving them a helping hand,” she lied.

“Who?”

“Use your brain Wyatt. Who else began an expansion around the same time that you were losing funds?”

“What?” he shouted. “You gave my money to my competitors?”

“I’ll never tell,” she said in a sing-song voice that had him balling his fists in anger.
