“Thanks,” Wyatt said turning his attention back to Gabby who was peacefully drifting off.

Chapter 8

“There she is,” Owen said the next afternoon as she and Wyatt came into his room. “How’s my baby girl?”

“I’m fine Dad,” she told him with a huge hug. “Several hours of sleep made it better and not even waking up here brought it back.”

“That’s good,” he stated. “Wyatt, I heard there was some confusion and commotion last night.”

“Nothing major Mr. Simmons,” he replied. “Guess I just don’t like these places.”

“Is that why you were ignoring our sister’s calls?” Sam asked a bit miffed.

“Guys stop,” Gabby cut in. “He’s here and that’s all that matters okay.”

“Pretty sure your doctor friend down there wished he wasn’t,” Viola said and Gabby could have strangled her.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Wyatt inquired.

“Just that considering he hadn’t even known her for twenty-four hours he was certainly more than willing to go the extra mile for her,” Viola added.

“Explanation please,” he said turning to Gabby.

“Fine…since everyone’s here I should only have to say it once. Thursday night I got a call from one of the girls who comes tothe center, she’d found her dad beating her mom and called the police then hid until they’d loaded her mom in the ambulance. She asked if I would come down and stay with her, so I agreed. When I got here Aaron, Dr. Jameson, was the doctor who was examining her mom. He came out and explained everything patiently to Iris and he continued to check on Irene throughout the rest of the night. Right before he left Iris’ grandmother got here and agreed to stay until Irene was better. That’s it.”

“I think you’re leaving out the fact that he didn’t know you were married, aren’t you?” Viola questioned her.

“God Viola what is your issue with this? I’m sorry if your love life isn’t so grand that you have to try and cause problems with mine but for once can you please just shut the hell up and let me be? I can’t deal with this right now…not on top of everything else,” she raged at her before fleeing the room.

“She’s certainly in a snit,” Viola said.

“Obviously I’ve missed something between you and Gabby,” Wyatt stated narrowing his eyes as he turned towards her, “but she’s just had a serious migraine attack as well as finding out…never mind.”

“She found out what?” Nate asked seizing the fragment and not letting go.

“Nothing,” Wyatt said heading to the door.

“Oh no you don’t,” Sam said stepping in front of him. “You can’t dangle something like that about our sister in front of us and not expect us to question what it is.”

“I need to check on Gabby,” he argued.

“Gabby can take care of herself, she’s been doing it for years,” Viola stated.

“What is it between the two of you?” he asked turning the attention back on her. “From day one you’ve never liked us together, why?”

“I never said that,” Viola said with a shrug.

“No, but it’s the impression you’ve given us. When we announced our engagement you looked furious and on our wedding day you wouldn’t even congratulate her,” Wyatt said trying to figure the relationship between the two out.

“It’s not like she needed yet another congratulation,” Viola bickered, “and I wasn’t furious, I was surprised.”

“Sure,” he said not believing a word she said. He turned and attempted to leave the room but Sam still blocked his way.

“Nice try but you’re not getting out of here so easily,” Nate told him.

“I think you should start with why you weren’t picking up the phone when Gabby kept calling you,” Sam said.

“My phone had died, I had an eight-hour flight yesterday…when I found the half cooked dinner I got worried and discovered her message.”
