“It was more of his old fashioned attitude towards me working that I took objection to,” Gabby stated. “It appears we have a large difference in opinion as to what a wife can and cannot do.”

“Ooh, man, you’ve put your foot in it now,” Eric said slapping him on the back.

“Please tell me you did not try and dictate what Gabby can do,” Joan added gaping at him. “This isn’t the 1800’s Wyatt. If Gabby wants to work, doesn’t want to work, wants to join a charity board…whatever she can do it. You don’t own her.”

“I agree man, I see some major gift shopping in your imminent future,” Eric stated.

“Maybe we should have kept this between ourselves,” Wyatt said.

“And maybe you’re the one who opened his mouth about it in the first place, after all you did say it was affecting our friends and family, and you know how much they all mean to me,” Gabby said enjoying the feeling of putting him on the spot.

“Fine, I was wrong,” he said loudly enough for everyone to hear. “I should not have told you that you were not allowed to work. I should have put it in another context.”

“Like what?” she asked crossing her arms.

“I should have stated that while I know you’ve grown bored sitting around doing nothing now that we’ve returned to normal life, I would like it if you didn’t find a new job so you can accompany me on my business trips. I’ve grown rather attached to having you next to me and I’d love for you to be free to travel with me whenever I need to go on one,” he said tipping her chin up and sending her a smile that would fool the room into thinking he was simply a man who couldn’t be without his new wife.

“Then why didn’t you just say so?” Gabby asked knowing there was no other way to go with this right now.

“Because I was an idiot who’s too used to getting his own way, I forget that we’re equals in this relationship occasionally, especially right after I come home from the office. Sharing the control is new to me…am I forgiven?” he inquired.

“I don’t know,” she said with a devious grin. “It depends on what’s in it for me.”

“How about a trip to the ballet, and this,” he suggested lowering his mouth to hers. The kiss was for the benefit of their guests and they both knew it. For Wyatt though it was an excuse to hold her in his arms and taste her sweetness but for Gabby it was a necessary evil. She’d put up with it as long as Haley and Jessica were safe.

“You’re honestly going to take me to the ballet?” she inquired when they parted to the amusement of their guests.

“Whichever one you want,” he stated. “Does that show just how sorry I am for being an ass?”

“It’s a start,” she teased.

“That’s right honey,” Joan said laughing. “Make him earn his forgiveness.”

“I will,” Gabby said with a genuine smile. It might take years for the truth to come out but when it did…he’d be begging her to forgive him and she’d enjoy every minute of it.

“Gabby, if you’re looking for something to keep you busy but not demand too much of your time I’m sure the Spencer Center would be thrilled to have another volunteer,” Melanie suggested.

“Isn’t that the new literacy, afterschool program for children of abuse?” another of their guests asked.

“It is,” Melanie said as her husband Vince joined them. “With your skills I’m sure they’d love to have you as a math tutor or to help with computer comprehension…the kids are great. I’ve volunteered a few times with the little ones and they’re so sweet it breaks your heart sometimes to hear what they’ve been through.”

“It sounds wonderful,” Gabby said sincerely.

“It’d be a nice change for you,” Wyatt added.

“It certainly would,” she said with a laugh that carried around the room. “You’ll have to give me some more information about it Melanie…”

Chapter 3

“You’re sure she knows?” Morris asked the next week.

“She took her phone in and had it looked over, they found your bug. I thought you said it would be impossible to locate,” Wyatt stated.

“It should have been,” Morris assured him. “Why did she take the phone in for?”

“She claimed there was interference with her conversations. I’d say she also knows about the tail on her. She’s going to start volunteering at the Spencer Center downtown so pull the man from her; it’ll be too obvious down there that someone’s following her.”

“Already done, anything else boss?”
