Feeling lighter, I trot upstairs.

Light spills from my bedroom doorway. My lips twist. Did he find his way to my bedroom already? I step inside and almost drop the water glasses. He’s already turned on the fairy lights and lit the candles by my bed. A simple thing but it seems really sweet.

Barefoot and bare-chested, he crosses the room, taking one of the glasses out of my hands. He brings it to his mouth and takes a deep swallow. He curls his other arm around me, pulling me closer, and shuts my bedroom door.

Ding!

I blink and stare at my phone, then the clock.

1:07 a.m.

What the hell? Sleepy and confused, I grab my phone and flick the screen on.

Serena: It’s go time!

“Oh my God!” I squeal.

Behind me, Dex stirs.

Me: Are you okay? Should I come to the hospital?

Serena: Hurts. Gray will text when it’s okay to visit.

Me: You’ve got this. Love you!

She sends back a row of heart emojis.

“Oh, wow.” I fall back against the pillow, smiling to myself. Serena’s going to be a mother.

Worry wraps itself around my happiness for my friend.

“Is Libby okay?” Dex asks in a sleepy rumble.

My chest squeezes. He’s half asleep but still worried about my sister. Not wanting to startle him awake, I lightly rest my hand on his arm. “It was Serena. She’s on her way to the hospital.”

“What?” He sits up, rubbing his eyes. “She okay?”

How does he do it? Worrying so much about everyone around him? Who worries about him?

I rub my hand over his back. “She’s about to push a tiny human out of her vagina, so no, I wouldn’t say she’sokay. She’s in labor.”

He glances over at me withwhat the fuckclearly written all over his sleepy face. “I didn’t needthatimage of my brother’s ol’ lady in my head.”

“Sorry.”

He reaches over and checks his phone. Curious, I peer over to see what he’s responding to.

Dex: Call me if you need anything.

He sets his phone down on the nightstand. “Group text came from Z.”

“Aw, the whole family got a middle-of-the night baby-on-the-way announcement?” For a club of big, rowdy bikers, that seems really sweet.

He huffs a laugh and reclines against the pillows. “Yeah.” Stretching one arm over to my side of the bed, he tilts his head. “Come here.”

I set my phone down and curl up next to him, dragging the covers up over us.
