“Full house?” I ask.

“Yeah. Most of us live up here, so it’s usually busy on the weekends.” He waits for me to get off the bike.

I stand staring at the forest and inhale the crisp, fresh mountain air. “Wow, this is really pretty.”

“Thank you.” He stops and follows my line of sight as if appreciating the view for the first time in a while. “We were lucky to find the place.”

He points to one of the paths leading into the woods. “A few brothers have built houses on the property.”

“Wow, really?”

“Z likes to joke that we’re building a prepper compound.” Dex chuckles. “I guess he’s not wrong.”

“Z’s the one you said moved to your downstate club?”

He nods quickly. “He started construction on a house before the move, and then decided to finish it so he and his family have a place to stay when they’re up here.”

Damn. That must cost a fortune. But it’s a rude comment, so I keep it in my mouth. Now, if you remember to do that this weekend, you’ll be golden.

“I’ll take you for a walk around the property tomorrow, if you want.” He curls his hand around mine. “Word of warning. Everyone’s gonna pounce on you. You’ve already met some of the old ladies a few times. They’ve been looking forward to seeing you.”

He wiggles his fingers, signaling I should hand him my backpack.

“Really?” I shrug the pack off and hand it to him.

“My brothers, though…” An exasperated smile twists his lips. “They’re gonna enjoy razzing my ass.”

“For bringing a girl home to meet the family?” I tease.

His smile fades. “Exactly.”

“I can handle them.” I reconsider my answer, remembering some of the things I’ve read about biker clubs. “No one’s going to, like…try to hit on me to test my loyalty toyou, are they?”

He stops and considers the question for longer than I expected. “No one should do that here.”

That’s not exactly reassuring.

I shift my gaze to the clubhouse. “Willow won’t be here, will she?”

“I’m not sure. But I had a few words with her after you visited CB. She won’t throw that attitude again.”

“Oh, great.”I knew I should’ve kept my mouth shut.“Now she probably hates me.”

“No, she just needed to understand you’re important to me.”

“Aww.” I squeeze his hand and try not to melt into a puddle at his feet.

“I wouldn’t bring you here, otherwise.” In a lower voice, he adds, “Never have before.”

I don’t know how to interpret that but before I can ask, the screen door squeaks open and a beast of a man thunders down the stairs.

“Look who it is.”

Dex takes a step back. “Don’t you fucking dare.”

Apparently, his brother interprets the warning as a challenge. He wraps his giant arms around Dex and lifts him in the air.

“Motherfucker,” Dex grunts.
