"Exactly."

"All right, fair enough. I'll call it in."

Lock was silent for a moment. "Are you okay, though?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just want Igno’s head on a pike."

"Join the fucking queue. I'm not sure if it's better or worse that Saff is the one at the head of the queue. She might not leave you anything to kill."

"You know what, if it's Saff who kills him, I could be happy about that. She'll at least make it hurt."

"Yeah, right on."

Saff was a force of nature. Hands down the best hand-to-hand specialist we had. Granted there was a reason she was called the Heir. Rogues Division would one day be hers. And she'd been training her whole damn life for it.

When she fought, she was deadly. I wasn't bad in hand-to-hand, but my specialty was tech, and I was a fair shot.

I hoped to God they figured out what the hell was in that syringe and what the hell we were dealing with.

I hung up with Lock and then made the call I was dreading.

When Montgomery answered, his voice was full of ice. “What?”

"Someone made an attempt on Nissa up at Angel."

"What the fuck was she doing in Angel?"

I should have been surprised that he was more concerned about why Nissa was in Angel than the fact that someone had been trying to take her out, but I knew better. This was Julian Montgomery after all.

"Research for a school project. I was with her the whole time. She didn't want the car. It was either let her take public transport or be messy, and you told me to be discreet as possible. I’m worried she might be tagged though. They definitely knew exactly where we would be, but I took care of it.”

"Body?”

I cleared my throat. "No. I cleaned it up."

"Well done."

"In case you're wondering, she's okay."

Montgomery laughed low. "I have no concerns. The reason I picked you for this gig is that I know you have a soft spot for her. You always have. You always put her best interest above all. Which makes you the perfect one to protect her. Just as long as you know to keep your hands off."

With that, he hung up the phone. He was a fucking twat. But like him, and like Nissa today, I was glad I was the one who was here. I wasn't letting Igno’s men anywhere near her again.

My phone vibrated and I glanced down at it. The name on the text message had my heart falling into my stomach.

Nissa

Fear. Worry. Disappointment. My emotions were chaotic.

The knock on my door startled me. When I peeled my eyes open, I snatched the duvet from over my head. I glanced up to find light streaming in from the hallway, and Westin was holding a tray.

"How long have I been asleep?" I asked.

"A couple of hours. I figured you could use some food. I would have pushed this on you sooner, but I thought maybe the rest was more important."

He’d brought me food. The sheer act made my heart squeeze. Not only was he terrifyingly dangerous, good-looking enough to make you lose your knickers, and knowing enough to make you want to shoot something; he was also genuinely kind.

"You don't have to do this. I'm sure it's not in your job description."
