“Woah! Jesus, guys! You’re worse than the raccoons! Calm it the fuck down, I wasn’t going to leave you behind. Plus, I was with Ezra. You goddamn motherfuckers are worse than helicopter parents.” That last part I say more to myself, rolling my eyes dramatically even though they can’t see them.

The engine starts before they can say anything else and I settle further into my seat. It’s time to see if we can get any closer to figuring out who the fuck is stalking me.

Fuck yeah!

Fifteen minutes later, the truck stops and I unbuckle my seatbelt and reach for the door handle. I use every ounce of the lacking strength I possess to push the heavy ass door open before making sure I have my cane and my coffee. Gizmo and Snitch hop out before I do, staying close to my legs and guiding me to what I assume is a sidewalk, helping to lead me up the step without tripping.

“Wicked! Where have you been?” Officer Bass’s familiar happy-go-lucky voice calls from off to my left so I head his way.

“Officer Ass! What are you doing here?” My brows crinkle in confusion as I tighten my hand on my cane reflexively. Taking a deep breath, I force myself to relax my hold and put my wrist through its lanyard to free up a hand.

“What do you mean?” His voice is as thoroughly lost as I seem to be, leaving me with no choice but to tune into his aura to get some answers.

“What the hell, guys?!” I stomp my foot before swinging around towards them. “Why the fuck are we at the precinct?”

“Calm down, killer. Alan wanted to meet with Nic.” Kai swings his arm around my shoulders, shuffling me towards the entrance as if I have no idea where it is. I want to shove him away, maybe even give him a swift jab to the throat at his assumption that I need his help, but I find myself leaning into his hold instead.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

“You tricked me, you sons of bitches.” I grind my teeth as I force the words out. I hate being so…gullible, really. I honestly thought for a second they were actually going to help me. But no, I’m still very much just a job to them. Someone to keep out of the way and watch over.

Believing, even for a second, otherwise, just makes me a huge idiot.

“We didn’t trick you. We never agreed to anything.” Nic’s accented voice interjects from behind me and I know where I’m about to aim my anger. The concrete under my feet switches to linoleum as we make our way through the door and enter the office.

“A trick is when you make someone believe something that is not true, or persuade someone to do something based on a false understanding of the facts. For example, you let someone–me–believe that they–again, me–were getting in the car to go to one place, but instead, you took them somewhere else.”

“Fine. We tricked you. What are you going to do about it?” His voice holds a challenge and I find myself growing more and more angry.

“I’ll remember this.” I’ll fucking show them who they’re fucking with, that’s what.

“Good. I hope you do. And I hope you remember how utterly effortless it was to do so, too.” I stop walking as his aura passes me and halts directly in my path. Gizmo and Snitch squeak in confusion as they press against my legs, but I whistle softly to reassure them. “What’s wrong, Wicked? I thought you knew all the secrets.”

Electricity seems to spark up between us as Kai removes his arm and backs away like the traitor he is. The air is heavy as I try to draw it in and I raise my head towards where I know Nic’s face is, feigning confidence that I’m not sure I possess at the moment.

“Do you really want to do this, puta?” I grip my coffee tighter, trying to convince myself the fire roaring inside of me is rage and not…something else.

“You don’t scare me,psíquica. Your ability to get revenge is probably about as good as your grasp of the Spanish language. Why don’t you stop being a brat and try to learn something from this? If I can trick you, who else can?” With that, he turns and stomps away, the clicking of his expensive leather shoes on the linoleum echoing the entire way. The bubble of electric fire and hate pops inside me as I’m left feeling bereft and like I’ve somehow lost a battle.

“Come on, Wick. Let’s go see if these animals have left any donuts for us.” Kai swings his arm around me once more, leading me to where our offices are. I try to shake off the sour mood that Nic always seems to smother me with and instead, set to planning my revenge.

Nic may have won this time, but I know I’ll win the war waging between us. He hasn’t seen anything yet.

Kai steers me to my desk where I sit down and kick my feet up, enjoying a few dozen chugs of my coffee. Today seems like the kind of day where I’ll need all the caffeine I can get, so I guzzle it down like I’ve been stranded in the desert for a week and finally found water.
