Right?

“None of this makes any sense!” I throw my hands up in the air before pulling violently at my hair. I’m so over this shit. I’m tired of being confused, of being watched, of not having any say in my life. What the fuck does a girl have to do to get a little control back?

I relay all my thoughts and theories to the guys as quickly and concisely as I can. There’s really no point in keeping it from them, even if it does sound crazy. If we’re going to be a team, a good team, then we need to be open about everything.

“Well, you wouldn’t be a good psychic without a little mystery of your own, right?” Kai’s voice is serious after I’m done speaking, but his aura flashes with desperate mischief.

A crazed cackle leaves me and I clap my hand over my mouth to stop it, but giggles erupt from my throat until I’m forced to let go and succumb to them. I quickly dissolve into full blown hysterical laughter. I laugh and laugh until my abs start to hurt and my face strains from the wide smile splitting it in half. Tears leave my eyes and I wipe at them as I try to regain my composure.

“You’re right, Kai. What’s a psychic without mystery?” I grin at him, his aura flashing with satisfaction knowing he managed to pull me out of my funk. He should be proud. He’s damn good at making me laugh. And just like a psychic without mystery, what’s life without laughter?

“Guys, I think I found something.” Nic pulls our attention once more and we all step towards him. “Wait. What? No! Fuck!”

“What’s wrong?!” My heart stutters in my chest and I grip at the closest thing to me, which just so happens to be a nice big handful of Nic’s hair.

I don’t let go.

“I found a folder that said it was CCTV footage from outside the gas station where your accident was, but every single video file is corrupted in some way. They’re not playing at all! Fuck!” He shoves at the computer desk and surges to his feet. My grip on his hair drags me with him and his arms close around me when I almost fall.

My pulse pounds in my ears as he holds me almost a foot from the floor, my hair hanging behind me as his focus lasers in on me. His breathing is ragged and his body is so tense and still above me. For a deliriously long moment, neither of us move, the heat rising and snapping electricity between us until I’m practically vibrating from anticipation.

This moment is nothing like our previous fucks, or even the after part. He’s never shown me affection or PDA outside of those moments. Which I have, until this point, not had a problem with in the least. Now though? I feel like I’ve seen a glimpse of something I’ve been missing. Like I truly want to be something more to him than a random fuck. Like thissomethingbetween us is more than just lust. It could be something more.

His aura seems to crackle with the need to touch me, kiss me, hold me. He feels like he’s failing me by not finding more information for me. He wants to be a part of the group, but he’s holding back and is confused as to why. He wants me, but he feels like he can’t have me.

My hand moves forward, softly stroking over the side of his face, his coarse five o’clock shadow rough against my palm. He leans into my touch slightly, almost hesitantly, and flames seem to lick at my nerve endings, frying them. His hold on me tightens and his face descends towards mine, my lips parting just a hair’s breadth…

A bang sounds from somewhere in the room behind us.

It takes mere milliseconds for Nic to right me on my feet and pull me behind him as Ezra and Kai jump in front of me as well. Footsteps echo through the room as whoever is walking in makes their way towards us. I breathe quietly, shaking off the remnants of a moment passed and lost between Nic and I as Gizmo and Snitch quietly latch on to my legs. It’s not like there’s anywhere for us to hide, we just have to wait and see what fate has planned for us.

As the steps get closer and round the corner, they come to a full stop and I push my focus out to read who it is. “Ally?”

“It’s, um…Andy?” She nervously giggles as she takes in our group and I push the guys aside now that I know there’s no threat. Hopefully. I mean, she could snitch on us to Alan. Which, while it isn’t the worst thing, I’d rather him not know we were ever here.

“Right. Andy! How are you, girl?” I smile widely at her, putting extra sugar in my tone. So maybe I’m laying it on a bit thick, but oh well. She doesn’t seem like the type to care if my sweetness is feigned or not. She seems lonely.

“I’m…good?” Confusion swirls from her across the space and it would be almost comical if I weren’t just slightly put off at being interrupted.

Not just because Nic was…whatever he was. But because I still wanted to look into some more shit. Like the missing CCTV recordings, the missing casings from our run in down in my dad’s workshop, and–only slightly guilty about this one–Alan’s supposed car wreck when he was supposed to be there with us. We need to figure out whether or not it’s even possible that he was lying.

I’d really like to strike him from the suspect list, even if all it does is leave us without a list at all. Because there’s no way in hell I’m going to seriously consider adding my dead dad to it. Even if it is possible that he…I don’t know…didn’t die? Maybe just suffered a crazy bad head wound and is confused?

Frankly, I find myself missing Alan. He’s the closest thing to a father I’ve had all these years. He’s done so much for me and I for him. We’re family. But even if family isn’t above suspicion in cases like this, it still fucking hurts to be at odds with him. I hate it.

Kai forces a cough and I realize we’ve been standing here in some sort of awkward stand off while I’ve been lost in thought, so I return my attention to the woman who has always wanted it.

“So, A-Andy,how’s…” I quickly flick through memories, trying to remember what exactly she even does here. What did Kai say last time we ran into her? “Forensic science!” I snap my fingers and grin as it comes to me. “How’re your studies in forensic science coming along?”

“Oh! Really good, actually!” She starts to babble on about whatever it is she’s doing and my mind instinctively starts to wander. Her nervous energy is flaring out, but I quickly realize that I’m pretty sure that’s just how she is. She’s like a nervous little sewer rat just trying to survive in a world with far more predators than prey.

No! Bad Wicked! Must. Be. Nice.

I tune back in as she finishes saying something about the different markers in blood types and I smile and nod like I was listening the whole time. When she tries to continue talking, I butt in at my only opportunity.

“That all sounds, like, so awesome! So, listen, I don’t think it’s a good idea if you told anyone we were here, you feel me?” I keep my tone as sweet and enthralled as I possibly can. Maybe I should have just let Kai handle this, he’s so much better with people!

“Wait, what? Why?” Caution suddenly joins in with her nervous, bubbly energy and I put my hands up placatingly.
