Page 32 of No Rest For Wicked

Between Kai’s obscene laughter and the raccoons’ decidedly terrifying growls, Ezra lets out a short whistle. Gizmo and Snitch immediately let go and run to him, hopping up on him where he’s casually laying at the head of his bed, sans shirt. They curl up on his large chest together, flopping around like cats as they get comfortable, purring as he rubs their tiny heads.

Yet, their beady, black eyes never stray from me for long.

“What the fuck do I have to do to get them off my ass?”

“Maybe try being nice to them?” Kai drawls, as he too, gets comfortable on the bed beside Ezra, leaving me standing in a corner by an obscenely large hamster-like wheel with shredded pants and scratched up shoes.

“Aw, come on. Not the shoes!” I lick my finger and bend to see if I can buff out one of the scratches but it does nothing. Sitting directly on the floor, I hang my head between my exposed knees and sigh.

“So funny isn’t working. Comfort isn’t working. What the fuck are we supposed to do?” Kai continues on as if my entire world hasn’t been set on fire by the two raging furballs that are the sole guardians of Wicked’s heart.

“You’re both fucking idiots. I’ll handle it.” I pull myself to my feet and grab my phone, striding from the room as I continue muttering curses under my breath.

“I can still understand you, you know!” Kai yells after me as he chuckles.

“Good!”

Returning to the godawful room that I’ve been assigned during my stay atWicked’s Bed and Breakfast, as Wicked so eloquently calls it, I ignore the terrible decorating choices and make a few calls to getOperation Tame the Red Devilstarted.

Kai and Ezra are good at a lot of things when it comes to Wicked, but they act like they’ve never actually gotten close to a woman before. They’re decidedly ignorant on quite a few things. Which makes no fucking sense.

Kai had a younger sister growing up, so he can do hair and understands certain things that even I don’t think of, and Ezra had a fucking fiance at one point. Why is it thatIam the one who knows how to handlethattime of the month?

My phone rings and I answer without checking who’s calling first. “¿Bueno?”

“¡Nicolás!¿Por qué no has llamado?” I wince as her voice sounds through the receiver, checking to make sure the door is closed to the room.

“Luciana.” I speak her name gently. “I’m sorry. It’s been…I’ve been busy.”

“I thought something had happened to you! You never go this long without checking in. Why must you worry me like that?” Her English isn’t as good as mine, her accent probably too thick for some to even understand, but she’s trying.

“Look, I’m sorry. I’ll try not to let it happen again. But I have to go, I’m busy.”

“Too busy for your favoritetía?”

“I’m sorry, Lu, but there’s just a lot going on right now.” Exhaustion settles heavily over my mind, and I rub at my eyes, trying to wipe it away.

“I don’t like it here, Nic.” Her voice goes soft and I can hear the tears threatening to surface, spiking my heart rate.

“Why? What’s wrong? What did they do?” The worry in my voice is obvious, but it’s my aunt Lucy, I don’t have to hide my worry to her. I don’t have to hide anything. Except for Wicked.

“No. Nothing like that,Sobrino. It’s a lovely place. Everyone is very nice. I’m just so lonely.” She practically whimpers the last word and I take a deep breath.

“Have you tried making friends like I told you, Lu? It would be good for you.” I pull my phone away from my face as it buzzes, the notifications for my deliveries coming through. They’re almost here.

“Well there is one woman, Marie, but-”

“No buts. Talk to her. She probably needs a friend too.” I tap my fingers on the top of the dresser I’m standing next to, accidentally knocking off some kind of doll statue in the process. As I bend over to retrieve it, I catch sight of a small black box under the bed, curiosity flooding me at its odd placement. “Listen. I’ve got to go. I’ll call soon. Talk to Marie. Invite her to your room for cards. It’ll be fun.”

“Oh, okay.Te amo, Sobrino.”

“Te amo, Tía.”I hang up and slide my phone into my pocket before crawling to the bed, sliding out the rather large black box, and lifting the lid.

Then I immediately slam it back shut and throw it as far away from me as I can. But in my haste to rid myself of the cancerous knowledge of its contents, said contents end up flying from the box and scattering across the room. I scramble backwards on my ass as one lands way too close for comfort, banging my head on the door that now stands open.

“What are you-” Kai cuts off and his gaze widens as he takes in the items splattered across the room. He chokes. Coughs. Then immediately breaks into laughter. “Wow. I knew you were kinky, Nic, but I didn’t think you werethiskinky.”

Tears leak from his eyes as his gaze finds the one item that landed the closest to me: an arm sized floppy, silicon, bright pink, glittery dildo.
