Page 56 of No Rest For Wicked

“My thoughts exactly.” Gizmo and Snitch have since gotten fed up with waiting for their snack and have resorted to climbing on the table and hissing at everyone who walks by, the smells of delicious, unhealthy food drifting all around them doing nothing but angering my poor babies. “Where the fuck did our waitress go?”

“Did you order food?” Kai questions, his seat squeaking as he spins in place to look around the diner.

“I just ordered bacon for Gizmo and Snitch to snack on. I figured we’d all eat after my meeting with Uncle B. They haven’t eaten yet today.”

My point is emphasized as a diner patron happens to walk a little too close to our booth and Snitch practically snarls at her, causing her to squeal and fall into the table next to us, the table and chairs falling with a loud bang that sends the diner into silence.

“What the hell?! Why are there wild animals in here?” She screeches as she tries to stumble to her feet, fear, rage, and embarrassment flicking at me wildly from her aura.

“Sorry. They’ve been waiting for their food for a while. They’re just a little hangry. They won’t hurt you. They’re basically just yelling at you.” I try to diffuse the situation, but the woman’s embarrassment is riding her, fueling her thoughts and actions, and I know the situation is just going to get worse from here. “Come on, guys. Let’s just leave.”

I nudge Ezra to move and we all leave the booth, Gizmo and Snitch hopping down to stand by my feet. They don’t move even an inch from me, but the dramatic scream that the woman emits as they jump off the table is the equivalent of someone getting mauled by a bear. She even falls back to her ass, scooting away and cowering.

And there’s the concerned crowd. Go figure.

“Oh shut up, they aren’t even looking at you,” Itskat her, annoyance slicing through me as she makes a scene.

“I’m calling the cops! You brought dangerous animals into a restaurant! They tried to attack me!” She practically shrieks the words, still not bothering to try and stand again as we all gaze down at her in disgust.

“I think it’s time for you all to leave.” A gruff voice filters through the noise, making me roll my eyes.

“We’re trying.” I nudge Kai on my left to try and get him to start walking again as Ezra closes in on my right. As soon as I take a step though, Gizmo and Snitch have to move out of the way so I can walk and the woman screams once more.

Her intention reaches me only seconds before she acts, but I’m not fast enough. Before I can move to block her movement, a loud thud reaches my ears before a high pitched yelp surfaces from Snitch. I immediately drop to my knees, wrapping my arms around my whimpering baby and cradling him to my chest as Gizmo scrambles to my shoulders with panicked chirps and howls that have my heart practically shattering in my chest. When Snitch’s whimpers finally taper off to a purr as I cradle him, tears flood my eyes.

“Shh. It’s okay, baby. It’s okay. Mommy’s got you.” I press a gentle kiss to his head as Gizmo sniffs and nudges at him over my shoulder. “Here. Hold him, please.” I hand him off to the first guy I find as I stand in place, Gizmo immediately moving to their shoulders to stay with his brother.

Then I turn.

“Wicked, no!”

I don’t think. I just act.

The whimpers of pain surfacing from Snitch are the only thing ricocheting around my mind and cause me to lash out in anger. Rearing my foot back, I send it towards the woman on the floor. Just like she did to Snitch. Her answering squeal of pain isalmostenough to soothe the fury blazing a trail through me, but not quite.

“How do you like being kicked, you fucking bitch?!” I move to kick her again, but two gorilla arms sweep me off my feet and out of reach as I continue snarling insults at the woman who dared to harm one of my babies. “You motherfucking scum! Hurting an innocent animal! You fucking monster!”

I struggle to get out of the iron hold that Ezra has on me, but it’s no use. He simply rushes me towards the exit and straight out the door, the frigid air assaulting me as surely as I just assaulted that monster on two feet.

I don’t regret it. Not one bit.

You don’t hurt my babies and get away with it.

“Izabella!” Nic’s snarl pierces through the fog of wrath in my mind, making me pause my mad scramble to make that bitch bleed, but his interruption only serves to direct my ire to him. “Knock it the fuck off!”

“Fuck you! She kicked Snitch! She deserves far worse!” Hurt that he’s not on my side, I try to settle into the well of anger bubbling in my gut to protect myself, holding on tightly to my fury like a shield against any and all who want to attack me and mine.

Nic curses then stops, sighing deeply before speaking again. His voice is soft and far gentler than my dickhead has ever spoken before. “I know,mi vida. I understand why you did it, but you have to be careful. We don’t want to give Alan the ammunition to arrest you for your ownsafety.”

That gives me pause and I stop struggling against Ezra’s hold, collapsing against his chest as exhaustion settles over me. “Shit. I’m sorry.”

Now that I’m not fighting him, Ezra plants me back on my feet with a loving touch to the small of my back, his ever present support helping to bolster me once more.

“How’s Snitch? Who has him?”

“I do.” Nic’s response has me stepping in his direction instantly, breathing deeply to dispel the last of my tempestuous emotions so I can focus.

“He’s letting you hold him?” I can’t even begin to hide the shock in my voice as I reach up and feel for the furry form of my trash panda. From what I can tell, Snitch isn’t just letting Nic hold him, he’s practically burrowed into his arms like a cat in a brand new box.
