He hesitates, as if waiting for me to change my mind.

But I can’t.

It would only end in disaster for both of us. Him more so than me.

Finally, he walks to his pile of clothes and grabs his briefs, turning around as he dresses. This feels so wrong. But what choice do we have?

We don’t, both of us victims of circumstance and tradition.

Once Creed has his jeans on, he tugs on his shirt and faces me as he buttons it.

“You’ll be okay?”

It’s a loaded question. I’m not sure if I’ve really ever been okay. Or if I ever will be.

“Of course. You?”

He smiles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “Of course.”

He finishes buttoning his shirt, then steps toward me. My breath hitches when he leans down, stopping just shy of my mouth.

“Give me one last kiss. One last taste. Before we go back to being who we are to each other. Please. One last kiss goodbye.”

When he puts it that way, I’m completely powerless to refuse him.

Even though I fear this one last kiss will destroy me.

Nodding, I whisper, “One last kiss goodbye.”

“One last kiss goodbye,” he repeats as he presses his mouth to mine, dragging my body against his, his arms swallowing me one last time.

Then he drops his hold on me, increasing the distance between us. He meets my gaze, lips parting, as if about to say something. Make some emotion-filled plea about why we don’t have to walk away after experiencing something so incredible.

Instead, he sighs, turning and disappearing from my room without a single glance back.
