I roll my eyes. “Con can’t fight. Cara and I will be fine.”

What Atlas doesn’t know—and what I’m not going to tell him—is that I spoke to Temper and told him my idea, and he approved it. I know that probably makes it ten million times worse because literally everyone knows except Atlas and Decker.

I look at the necklace around Cara’s neck and nod.

Yeah, we are doing this.

“Okay, Cara, let’s go.”

We get in her car and drive off to our weekend getaway.

We all have a part to play.

Let’s just hope we make it out of ours.

“That car has been following us for a few miles now,” I comment under my breath.

Cara nods, but keeps her eyes on the road ahead. “I know. I can’t believe we are doing this right now. This seems like more of a Clover plan.”

“Clover’s a mother now; she can’t be doing this risky shit.”

“And I’m a teacher,” Cara replies, sighing. “I became a teacher so I can have a nice, safe and simple life.”

“How is that going for you?” I reply in a sarcastic tone.

She sighs and reaches out for my hand. “If we go down, we go together, sister.”

“Our men are going to kill us.”

“So either way, our lives are over today? Pretty rough,” she replies, then flashes me with a shaky smile. “We are going to be okay. We are Wards. We are both smart and crafty enough to make this happen, and we both know that or we wouldn’t be doing this.”

“I agree. We’ve got this.”

We arrive at the location, knowing Rhett is trailing us, and carry on like we normally would, moving our bags into the house and getting comfortable. Since we’re just waiting around, Cara makes a charcuterie board while I make sure our Tasers are charged. Why did I think this was a good idea? I make sure my gun is on me.

About an hour later, Rhett sends a text.

Rhett: That car parked across the road. And someone just hit the Knights clubhouse too.

Shit.

Cara and I share a look.

“That didn’t take long,” she comments.

We expect Marko or one of his cronies to break in with a gun, their usual MO. Before we have a chance to register what is happening, the glass window shatters and smoke fills the room.

And all I see is black.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Atlas

I know something is wrong the second Rhett calls me, apologizing.

“What are you saying sorry for? Not your fault one of your men has betrayed you.”

“Atlas,” he breathes, and a bad feeling settles in my stomach.
