But the last time I felt this panicked, my brother died.

Chapter Thirty

Natalie

I try to force my eyes open, but I feel groggy and disoriented. What happened? It takes a few minutes, but then I remember.

Our plan.

Cara.

Marko.

I touch my neck, but the necklace is gone, which means no one can track us.

I’m so stupid. Why did I think I could be badass like Faye and Clover? I’m meant to be behind a desk, not luring psychos.

When I open my eyes I find myself in a dimly lit room, in a cage. He put us on the floor in a fucking cage, similar to a dog crate. Looking around, I see Cara in another cage, next to me.

“Cara?” I whisper, but she’s still unconscious.

“She’s fine,” Marko says, stepping out of the shadows and scaring the shit out of me. He seems calm, chill even, which unnerves me. “Just a little chloroform, nothing that will harm her.”

“What do you want with us?” I ask, even though I know. I just need to keep him talking to buy us time so Rhett can come and save our asses.

Atlas is going to be so mad at me, and as it turns out, he was right.

We shouldn’t have done this.

I’ve fucked up and now I’ve dragged my sister into this, too. If she gets hurt, I will never be able to forgive myself.

“Revenge is what I want,” he murmurs, pulling out a chair and sitting in front of me. “The Wind Dragons and the Knights have taken everything from me. It’s time that you all pay for that.”

“I don’t even know you.”

He nods. “No, but I know you. And at the end of this, you are the key. I should actually be thanking you. If it wasn’t for you being my lawyer and introducing me to Cole, this never would have played out like it did. But you are a loose end for me. Cole told me all about how you ruined his career. You’re not someone who will give up.”

“Cole ruined his own career,” I state.

“Doesn’t matter anymore, does it?” he comments, shrugging. “Rhett got off easy last time, and it’s not going to happen again. He has no idea about the damage he’s caused in my life, but he will. CJ went against me, and look at what happened to him. Sad, really. Once upon a time, I really did like the guy. And that Knight who died? That was the cherry on top of the sundae.”

I grit my teeth at his mention of CJ and Aries.

This bastard is going to pay for the damage he has caused.

I’ve watched enough crime documentaries to know that this isn’t going to end well for me unless I manage to either talk my way out of it, or escape. But I’m not going down without a fight.

The MC will be looking for us, and we need to live until then.

“What has Rhett done again?” I ask, trying to keep him talking, pretending like I don’t know the full story of how this beef began.

Make him see you as a person. Talk to him.

Sadness flashes in his brown eyes before he hides it. “He has destroyed my life. And I don’t care what happens to me, because I have nothing left to lose.”

That is a dangerous mentality to have.

“So now what? You wait for him to find me? You keep us here just to hurt him? What is going to happen?” I ask.
