“So, what you’re saying is that you’re the lesser evil?”

“Yeah. You could have Ma up here instead.”

I shudder. “Or worse, Lucas.”

We both grimace at each other, but she murmurs, “I don’t think you’d be this miserable if you were glad about Belle leaving.”

“Why would you think I’d be glad?”

“Because, brother or not, you’re a man and men are douches.”

I roll my eyes. “Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

“You’re welcome. You lived up to my expectations and that’s saying something.”

Shifting onto my back, I stare at the ceiling and mutter, “My life is here, Kitty. Her life is there. It’s not like you can resign from the Irish Mob.”

“She can come back to New York.”

“She hates the city. You should have seen what I had to do to get her here in the first place.”

“Am I too young and innocent to know?”

I snort. “It involved fingers and a blanket on the plane.”

“Ew, do they even launder those blankets?”

My lips twitch at her disgust. “They probably did after we used it.”

“Jesus, Cade, I don’t need to know anymore.” She shoves my arm. “Do you want her?”

“Isn’t that obvious?”

“Not really. Not from where I’m standing and, to be honest, not from where she’s sitting either. Ya know, on the other coast of our massive country.

“I mean, you didn’t tell her you have feelings for her when she told you she did, despite your rusty beginnings. You didn’t run after her when she left…”

“Has she texted you?”

“Yeah.”

Hope filters through me. “What did she say?”

“Nothing. She showed me her new manicure and they’re not the kind of nails you wear to a job interview.”

I frown. “What does that mean?”

“Well, she needs to get a new job, doesn’t she? She got fired from the diner. She never said if her friend hired her back.”

Blinking at her, I rumble, “Damn, you guys talked more than I realized. And no. Her father was richer than Midas. She’s his only heir.”

She sniffs. “It takes more than two weeks for an inheritance to come through. To job interviews, you’d go with classic French tips.”

“What are those?”

“The white ones.”

“Okay. What did she go with?”
