“You’re supposed to be in L.A.,” Lucas states, his voice grim with his annoyance.

“I came back a few days ago,” Cade snaps.

More like a week.

“I know. Róisín told me by accident that you’d gotten together with some Belle chick and were keeping her awake at night. Why didn’t you tell me you fucked up, Cade? I can’t fix your mistakes if you don’t warn—”

“I didn’t fuck up.” Cade’s answer is like a knife that’s been inserted into my chest. He was “sent” to L.A.Who is he?

“You did. You’re here, aren’t you? Not in California where you’resupposedto be. And Cindy goddamn Davis sure as hell isn’t here, is she?”

How does Lucas know my name when Cade introduced me to his family as Belle? When his sisters call me Isabelle most of the time?

Calm, just be calm,I chant in my head. Maybe Lucas is his business partner or—

“I didn’t fuck up, and I don’t always need you to fix my mistakes, damn it.”

“That you’re here without Cindy Davis says otherwise. If I’m wrong, explain what’s going on.”

Heart breaking, I swallow back bile as Cade counters, “Whatever Davis told Aidan was a lie.”

Davis.

Father.

And there it is.

I’ve been played by a devil with piercing blue eyes and dimples that turned my head.

He was sent by my father to bring me back to New York and, like a fucking pathetic loser, I let him. I followed him because he made me think I was special.

Staggering against the wall, I allow it to support me as Lucas demands, “What?”

Cade retorts, “I’m telling you, Davis is a liar. Cindy wasn’t being held against her will by the Disciples.”

I cover my trembling mouth, the urge to speak to Charlie strong. As is the urge to run. To get back to L.A. To have the Disciples hide me. I’ll take anything but staying here, listening to the man wholiedto me, who made me feel like he was falling for me all so he could deliver me to my death.

“Davis said that they kept her hooked on prescription meds and that was why she hung around, working her ass off at that diner until all hours—” Lucas’s voice makes me lift my head as my nails dig painfully into the wall.

“She worked there because she wanted to and I saw her prescription meds. They had Davis’s name on the label—he prescribed them to her as her doctor.”

“What?”

“I’m telling you he’s a liar. He abused her, Lucas. I’m not letting her go back to him.”

Suddenly, I’m dizzy enough that I might pass out. Did Cade just say he’s keeping me? That hewon’tlet my father have me?

What’s happening? He’s defending me to Lucas, but he’s the one who brought me here in the first place!

“You’re not letting her go back to him,” Lucas repeats. “What makes you think you have a choice in this? You’re my brother, and you’re only a part of Aidan’s crew because of that—”

“Nice to know how you feel about me, Lucas.”

“You know it’s true,” Lucas retorts. “Your head’s never in the game, Cade. When Aidan drew you into this, I knew you’d fuck up sooner or later.

“Why do you think I’ve been riding your ass hard about it? Trying to keep you on the straight and narrow—” He pauses. Hisses beneath his breath. “Isabelle. Belle. Please tell me that the broad you were just fucking isn’t Cindy Davis?”

“I wasn’t fucking her.”
