Page 22 of Playing with Fire

If I could, I would put the fire out, but it wasn't one of my abilities yet. The son of Hades and I couldn't even put out a fire, some would laugh at that weakness. The fact that I could grow flowers, ones that would grow and bloom in the dark, wasn't something that I made known. Sure, my mom was delighted by the knowledge, but it was embarrassing.

I had the power of restoring life, but I wasn't sure if it was an extension of the creation of flowers or if it extended what my father could do. Living in his shadow all the time was exhausting. He was a great dad and so understanding, but there was something in the depths of his eyes when he looked at me that said that he wanted more for me.

The demon shrugged, a laugh bubbled up from his throat as he turned and walked away with his companion.

Fantasia came into view, the glamour falling further away this time. Was it because I already knew it existed? The same troll from last night glowered at me from the front steps. But he only grunted before swinging the door wide.

It was early in the night so the music wasn't as pounding, and only a couple supes were near the bar Lex was working. I would never understand why he was lowering himself to bartender when he was the owner of this place. He was flirting with a fairy girl as I approached, but as soon as he caught sight of me, a scowl replaced his flirty grin.

"What are you doing here?" he asked as he wiped down the counter between us.

"I'm here about the hunter," I said.

He stilled as he pulled his eyes up to mine. "Samantha? What about her?"

Ah, a nerve, the twitch beneath his eye told me more than his monotone question. He didn't want me thinking of her at all.

"There is a group of demons that seem to be working together. They want to remove her from the equation, and I am supposed to bring her to them." The last word was barely out of my mouth before his fist was gripping my shirt and dragging me halfway across the bar.

"If you touch a single hair on her body, I will end your existence," he growled low, directly into my face.

I lifted an eyebrow and looked down at where he held me. "Are you quite done yet?"

Cerberus let out a low warning from next to me. He was ready to take out the demigod I once called a friend. Lex let me go, but the scowl was deeper as he glared at me. His mouth was a thin slash across his usually smiling face. He must care a great deal for the Goddess.

"You have obviously perfected your glamour, so if you would help me—" I paused and smoothed down my shirt as he released me. "And pretend to be the hunter. I can get closer to their camp and find out what they are planning and hopefully shut down the portal."

"You don't think they will smell the deception on us?"

He didn't deny me outright. That was a good sign. I shook my head. "Not a demigod and God, no, they are demons—the only one that could do that is Bellamy."

"What if the incubus is working with them?"

"He isn't."

Lex leaned back and studied me. "How are you so certain?"

"Bellamy just wants to escape his life, he doesn't want to bring it here." I knew the feeling, to be honest, and could sympathize with him in a way. It wouldn't stop me from bringing him home like his father asked me, but I understood the need to know who you were outside of your restraints.

I watched silently as Lex mixed a drink, tossing it in some metal contraption and shaking it before pouring it into a glassand sliding it down the countertop to a dwarf that had just taken up a stool. He knew these supernaturals without saying a word. He gave them what they wanted. I had always wanted to do what he did. Escape. Not that my life was horrible, it wasn't. My parents were loving and gave me anything I asked for, but I've always felt like there was more out there.

"If I agree to this, we keep Sam out of it," Lex finally said, and a smile slowly pulled at my lips. I didn't hide it. "Stop smiling like you've won. I haven't told you all my conditions yet."

"Go on then."

"You don't come back into Fantasia, for any reason," he said.

His words wiped the smile off my face, but I would agree to anything to stop whatever was happening before they actually got their hands on the hunter. "Anything else?" I asked, raising my brow in question.

"Stay away from Samantha," he said.

My hand ran over the tightness in my chest his words caused. I held his gaze, my emotions locked inside where he couldn't see them. My jaw set as my teeth ground together.

"Just like the past, is that it, Lex? You can't handle having me around as competition, so you eliminate me. Well, you can tell me to stay out of your perfect little utopia of a club, but you will never stop me from seeking Samantha," I sneered at him. He always thought he was flawless and rubbed it into my face at every turn. It grated on my nerves that he was trying to take my love from me now. "I had been willing to share her. Once she loves me, though, you won't see her again. Do you understand?"

"Once she loves you?" He barked out a laugh. "You are as delusional as your father."

"Leave my family out of this, or do you want to talk about your mother and brothers? Maybe the perfect new God your mother just gave life to. Would he also be your brother?"
