"That was before."

CHAPTER 39

Samantha

The wallsof the penthouse felt small, even though it was larger than my parent's house and my dorm room combined. It oozed luxury. From the fireplace to the sheets on the beds, it was over the top and reflected the man that just told me he was in love with me. No, it wasn't even that he was in love with me. He told me I was his true love, like this was some sort of freaking Disney movie.

I would not lie, it almost had me running screaming from the room. My commitment issues pushed their way back to the forefront of my mind, trying to take control. I fought back as I paced across the soft, plush carpet that my toes sunk into. My phone lit up with text after text from Raiden. The overwhelming emotions were too much, because I felt it too. The connection I had with Alastor. His words tugged it right out of that box I had stuffed it into when I first met him and sensed that spark, offering him sex because of it. Now it was flaunting itself around my head, urging me to do something about it.

Raiden

Sammy please answer…

With a sigh, I clicked into the text message string. Ignoring my first boyfriend wasn't the answer.

I'm okay, Rai. Don't worry.

His response came so quickly, I wasn't sure how he had time to type it.

I'm going to worry, I left you with a God. With the son of Hades. What if he kidnaps you or feeds you pomegranate seeds?

My laugh bounced off of the walls as I shook my head like he could see me.

No worries, he ordered room service and left me alone for the night.

Pomegranate seeds?

The response dots popped up and disappeared a few times without a text, so I dropped into the luxurious baby blue chair that faced the fire. A remote sat on the coffee table in front of me, so I picked it up to mess with it. A panel above the fireplace slid noiselessly up, revealing a television. That was fucking amazing. I tucked my legs beneath me as I flipped through the channels for something to watch.

One of theUnderworldscaught my attention, and I set the remote down. This would get my head off of romance. A badass female fighter, yes, please. Of course, the movie dashed my hopes as I remembered the lengths Selena went for Michael, the love that she felt for him made her human feelings return.Like the men in my life, two of which actually came from the Underworld. That thought gave me pause. Bellamy was not one of my men, was he?

You don't know the mythology?

He should know that. I almost failed that class last year, although that might have more to do with my best friend disappearing than the actual class. I had been so focused on finding Brook and her mom that I neglected all of my college courses. What else was I supposed to do? Life without her meant little, it was probably why I missed her so much with her gone. I suppose being Queen of the Fae was a good enough excuse, though.

You know that would be Brook, not me.

Hades trapped Persephone in the Underworld for six months out of the year by feeding her six seeds.

What if she wanted to eat them? Maybe it was the only way she could still see him.

What have you done with my Sammy? Have you bumped your head? You're going soft on me.

I reread my last message. Yeah, I could see why he would think it wasn't me responding. It was a little too sappy.

Whatever. I could still kick your ass.

I tossed the phone to the couch and settled in for the movie he was distracting me from. My eyes grew heavy before the ending credits rolled, and I fell asleep right where I was. When the buzzing of my alarm woke me at my usual eight a.m. for class, I jerked awake, a kink in my neck and the TV playing another movie I didn't know the name to.

Nightmares plagued me during the night, but I couldn't wake up from them. I didn't normally have bad dreams, especially not ones like last night. I straightened my pajamas and stood up to stretch. Still, I couldn't shake them.

The demons had come for me, one after another, in an army. I held my own for a while, but it became too much. I faltered and fell to my knees. Raiden stepped forward then, black wings spouted from his back, and his eyes glowed with a golden fire. The others kneeled next to him, bowing their heads as he reached for me. The nightmare would transform then, and it would be Bellamy reaching for me, an evil smile painted on his angled face. It was a loop that I couldn't escape.

"Just a dream," I muttered as I padded into the small kitchen. Flipping the coffee machine on, I focused on making the much needed caffeine, as I ignored the panicky feeling the dreams had created. Alastor thankfully had creamer in the fridge and sugar packets next to the coffeemaker.

As the elevator doors slid open and a haggard-looking Alastor stepped into the room, Cer popped to his feet next to the entrance ready to protect me. I turned toward them, my steaming mug in hand.

"You look like shit," I said.
