"He did?" I arched my brows and looked over at him. Where was the mention of finding me in the demon's arms?
"Yeah, he found him feeding on some poor girl. It is a good thing he was there to save her. You know what incubi do—" Ty said, trailing off.
My heart was thumping in my veins, but I wasn't sure if it was because I was being referred to as a 'poor girl' in this scenario of Raiden, the hero, or if it was because he kept my part secret, just between us.
“They found a lifeless body this morning, just off the trail. Some early runners spotted the girl and reported it to the police. It will be all over the news, our cleaners weren’t fast enough.”
"So—" I said, "what does that mean? If Rai saved the girl, how do you know the body is connected?"
That could have been me. He could have killed me. Why did I want to doubt it?
“There are no evident marks on her body. It appears that the demon took her soul.”
“That doesn’t sound like what he does,” I said. My mind was on the feel of his mouth on me, he wasn’t touching my soul. Not to take it anyway.
“You haven’t fought an incubus before, how would you know?” Ty pushed off of the arm of the sofa and examined me. He knew something. Had Rai told him?
"You can't hunt alone," my mother finally spoke up breaking off the stare down with my brother, her blue-green gaze focused on me as she set her coffee back down.
"I always hunt alone. I don't need help," I replied. I could handle the incubus, last night was just a slip-up. It wouldn't happen again, not now that my guard was back in place.
"We discussed it, Raiden will hunt with you," my father said. He said it like the vote was out, and I didn't get a say.
"Raiden ishuman," I stressed. I would not be responsible for keeping him safe and hunting. I thought I put this whole thing to bed the last time they brought it up and demanded that he help me. It would distract me enough to make a mistake because I wouldalwayssave him.
"Raiden can handle it," Ty said defensively, standing up for his best friend.
"I can," Raiden replied as he peeled off of the wall. "You need someone that the incubus can't affect. That would be me. I only have eyes for women, and he was not one."
"I'll ask Lex to help, he would do it. I know he will," I said, turning in Rai's direction. It didn't matter that Lex already told me he wasn't getting involved. He couldn't do this.
The answering growl that came from him had me stepping back in surprise. What was that? And why was it so fucking sexy? Damn, my panties were wet just from that single sound. Whoa, I needed to get laid. Walking around with sex on the brain and one foot out of the gutter was a horrible idea when I'd be facing an incubus.
"I will assist you, and that is the end of the discussion. Let me know when you are ready to go," he said and then stalked from the room.
Okay, Daddy, I mentally responded. I didn't know I could be any more attracted to the man, but he just surprised me as he took control. Did I want to give up control? Was that a kink I hador something? I was always in charge, always calling the shots, so this was new.
"What is that look?" Ty asked, abruptly yanking me back into the room with my family. I shifted on my feet uncomfortably, being caught lusting after Raiden in front of them. I was sure I had even drawn my lip into my mouth and bit down on it.
"Nothing, I'm still asking Lex, and if he says he will help, then Raiden is sitting this one out." I left the room before any of them could say another word. I needed to talk to my brother's best friend.
He was in the backyard tossing a football up into the air repeatedly as I came out on the back porch. He glanced in my direction and tucked the ball under his arm as he waited for me to approach. Tension lined his face as he watched me.
"I'm serious, Sammy," he said when I got closer.
And there he goes, putting me firmly back into the little sister category. Not that I ever escaped it, that was only in my head. "Fine, but I need to get laid if I'm hunting an incubus that feeds on desire. So, when we go to the club, don't talk to anyone while I'm gone."
He narrowed his eyes at me, but didn't say a single word about my orders. I had expected some sort of fight, he didn't like the idea of me hooking up with Lex. But Lex was better than the demon, and he was good at fucking the way I liked.

Alastor
The dark forestclosed in as the slap of the coward's feet was the only sound other than the low growl of Cerberus. They were all cowering-sniveling-babies once I showed up to ruin their fun. The girl they left behind curled into a ball and sobbed silently. They tore her shirt open, and the button of her jeans was somewhere on the dark path.
"Come on, let's get you home," I said, trying to be gentle as I knelt next to her. She shied away and cried harder. I sighed and sank back on my heels. "I will not hurt you."
