“I thought I could keep you safe on my own.”

Is that what this is about? I got a dreamless sleep, but West obsessed over the feral attack all night long?

“You did—”

“When I see you, I see Helene. I see sunshine and light. I see the best fucking five years of my life, and another three I wouldn’t change for anything no matter how tough they were. Because I still got to see you. To hope. To think that maybe…”

“Maybe? West? You’re frightening me.”

He lets out a hollow chuckle that sends shivers down my spine. “I knew it was only a matter of time before I did.”

That’s not what I meant. “What’s going on?” I ask again. “I think I missed something.”

“I called Bishop.”

Called Bishop… “There’s no phone here. How did you call him?”

West dips his hand into the back pocket of his jeans. When he pulls it out again, he’s holding a cellphone. “I had one for emergencies. I think you’d agree with me that last night was an emergency, Helene.”

Helene, I notice. Not Lane.

Not anymore.

“What did my brother say?”

Instead of answering me, he has a question of his own. “How strong is the bond you have with the Gravetail Alpha?”

He doesn’t use Rafael’s name if he can help it. He never has, and I’m so used to it that I don’t really understand what he’s asking me for a moment as I try to figure out why he’s bringing up my intended at all.

Wait—

If West never used Rafael’s name, that’s nothing compared to how he refused to acknowledge that I was Rafael’s fated mate. That includes any kind of bond I might already have with the other male.

“You called for him. And I don’t mean on the phone. You and your wolf… your soul cried out forhim.”

“What? When?”

“When the feral came after you. You called for him, and he felt it all the way in Darkwoods—”

Darkwoods. The name of the settlement where the Gravetail Pack claim their territory. And if he felt it, that means he knows exactly where I am…

At least, until West pumped me full of quicksilver.

No. I can’t think about that. Not when West looks like he’s seconds away from losing it, and all because my wolf wanted a male that wasn’t him.

“I was terrified. Strong emotions reach down all kinds of bonds. Bishop probably felt my panic all the way in Hickory!”

West clamps his jaw.

“What about you?” I ask. “Last night, after you…” I can’t even bring myself to talk about being intimate with West when he’s looking at me like that. ““You told me you felt me reach for you. That you were already on the way back to me before you heard me scream.”

“I did. But it was just another way I convinced myself that you wanted me. I’ve been a fool for too long. It’s not me. It’ll never be me. And I’m only being a selfish prick keeping you with me when I know it’s only putting you in danger.” He sniffs, tearing his gaze away from me. “Get dressed. We’re leaving.”

I should be happy to hear that. I should be fuckingelated.

I’m not.

“Is that what’s got you so worked up? You called Bishop and he ordered you to bring me home?”
