I narrow my eyes on her. “I know you had a shock today. You’re frightened and—”

“No.” She shakes her head, sending that long, thick hair whipping. “I made up my mind that I can’t continue with you before those men ever blasted into Patrick’s house.”

I lean in closer. She’s quivering. “Are you saying you’re finished with me?”

She tips her head and meets my gaze without so much as a wince. “Yes.”

Hot pain sears through me. The thought of her walking away now that I’ve decided on her and her alone is not acceptable.

“I won’t have it,” I say. “You gave yourself to me.”

“A lot of women have given themselves to you, Heath. And I’ve given myself to a lot of men.”

The admission that others have gone before me has red zigzags crossing in front of my vision. Of course I knew she wasn’t pure, but goddammit, now she is mine and I won’t back down until I get my way.

“It was just sex,” she says.

I slam my palm against the wall I’m braced against. She closes her eyes and presses her tormenting lips together but says nothing.

“It wasn’t just sex and you fucking know it! I’ve been crazy for you since the moment I set eyes on you when we were kids, Serenity. You think I can just forget about that—about you?”

Her breaths come faster and faster until her chest is heaving.

I swoop in and capture her mouth. She moans at first but then starts to fight me, twisting and bucking until I’m forced to let her go.

I shove away from the wall and step back. She doesn’t move, standing trapped like a startled dove.

“Look at me, woman.” I spread out my arms to my sides. “Do you know how many women have wanted a piece of me, and I never gave it to them?”

She says nothing.

“How many times do you think I’ve told a woman I want her—that she’s mine?”

She squeezes her eyes shut and shakes her head. “No, Heath. We can’t. It goes against your family. They hate me, they want me gone. My father screwed you over and you cast out the Hunts for good reason. I’m nothing but trouble to you. Look what happened to Patrick.” She hiccups back a cry. “To Nathan…”

I push her against the wall again, hands pinned over her head. I search her eyes. “Give yourself to me. You’re the only woman who ever could take me as I am. Without any thought of changing me.”

She issues a whimper.

I lay claim to her lips again, parting them for my questing tongue and demanding that she return my attentions stroke for stroke. She shudders and I call tell how hard it is for her to hold back from me.

Tearing my mouth free, I catch hold of her gaze again. I refuse to let her look away and follow the movement of her head so she can’t ignore me.

“I can’t think for wanting you,” I growl out. “Ever since I left you, you’ve been filling my mind. You can’t deny you feel the same for me.”

She frees her hands from my clasp, places them on my chest, trying to shove me away, but I won’t let her.

“Let me go, Heath!”

“We’re not finished here. We’ll never be finished, Serenity. Even now your nipples are hard. Your pussy,” I drag theSsound through my teeth, “is soaking wet for me. You want me to take you against this wall. Then on my bed. You need me to help you forget what separated us all those years ago.”

“No!” She shakes her head, but I persist.

“You are my queen.”

Her head snaps up.

I look deep into her eyes. “You know it. I know it. My family knows it. We are destined to be a team, you and I. Together, nothing can break us.”
