“Don’t be mad, but you were still technically having a free-spirited night as me, and I usually give my number to the good ones. Which lately hasn’t been much, so thank your lucky stars.” Eve laid on her back now, and I rested my head on her chest, the plushiest pillows on the bed by far. Both of us stared at the mundane ceiling, yet we imagined our memories from last night up on there like a blank canvas; or at least it would have been had it not been for scattered dots of Eve’s glow in the dark stars.

She had Willie, yet I had Nathan, the fucking sexiest man at the bar, and I did thank my lucky stars—no pun intended—that Eve picked him out for me and not for herself.

“Fine, I’m not mad. He did text me, and believe me, I tried shutting it down…” I shrugged, not understanding what was wrong with my mentality.

“Why would you want to do that?” Eve exclaimed, her body shook the bed as she sat up.

“Well, I didn’t really shut it down, but my reality is that I’m engaged to Robbie, and I can’t change it.” Eve stuck her finger in her mouth, pretending to gag at my statement. “Oh, stop it.” I pushed her off the bed and sprang up to look through her shoe rack. Thank god we wore the same small size-six shoe. It wasn’t the most popular size amongst best friends.

“Seriously Jules. Nathan is really hot, and if you ditch him, I wouldn’t mind taking a stab at him. You know what they say,” Eve sat at her vanity to powder her face, “blondes do have more fun.”

I stuck my tongue out at her almost wincing at the prospect of her taking him away. I wouldn’t allow it, but he’s not mine to claim either.

“He’s my delicious side piece, but I don’t know. I wished he could be more, you know?”

“Sounds like you need to do what you want. Don’t think about anyone else, what do you want?”

Shit, the familiar question was raised again. “Funny you should ask, because that was the last text he sent me earlier, and I’ve been thinking about it, I swear. I just don’t know if what I want is the right thing to do.”

“Smart and hot. I pegged Willie for just one of those, but you got both qualities.” She squinted her eyes at me, placing her red lipstick on. She kissed the air, applying liner and a gloss that popped gorgeously against the tone of her face.

“Besides, we both know how this has to end anyway.”

“Does he know though?”

That was a great question. There’s something about him that pulled me toward him. Maybe we had the same gravitational pull that wanted us together. I highly doubted he’d want to talk to me if I sent something as cringe-y as my thoughts.

“No, he technically doesn’t know anything. That’s fine though, right? I don’t think he needs to know. I haven’t even texted him back. I’ll keep it that way. But part of me still wants to keep exploring, for fun.”Please, please, please Eve just tell me what I need to hear.

“Depends, how was the kiss?” And she just went there. Her malicious grin said everything in itself.

“Dirty tramp.”

“That’s my favorite pet name, how’d you know?” She scrunched her face, giggling, rolling her eyes off her precious little blonde head.

“You know I won’t let you off that easy, right? I saw you and Willie…”

“No, you did not!” She cut me off and blushed redder than her cherry lipstick. It was quite the sight to see.

“Damn right I saw something going on at that booth last night. But what was it? Hmmm I just can’t put my finger on it, or should I say in it.” I wiggled my eyebrows, teasing the shit out of her.

“Oh, and you loved watching it!” She tilted her head back laughing. “You’re the dirty tramp… and I love it.” She gasped, covering her mouth.

“No, not like that Eve.”

“You said it, not me. Besides… it was not a little finger.” She winked.

“You’re so brazen, and I’m so jealous.”

“Text him tonight, maybe have a little saucy fun.”

I thought I knew what she meant by that; however, I’d never done that before, and I couldn’t with a stranger, right? Especially not one that I had no relationship with. Or was it best to try these things with a hot stranger?

Later that evening, Eve and I arrived late to our double date at the steak house. Eve always said beauty takes time, and in our case, an extra thirty minutes. We saw both men sitting together inside the restaurant, laughing as if they were old long-lost pals. I was both happy and annoyed to see this, especially considering the fact that Robbie hadn’t been this friendly towards me for months now. I guess Willie had a charm that not even I possessed. I glanced at Eve who seemed as tense as I felt over the interaction and both our chests caved in. I had my reasons, I was sure she did too.

“It’ll be a fun double date,” I assured her, rubbing her back as we edged closer to the table.

Willie looked over and nodded at us. They both stood up at our arrival, pulling our seats back. Robbie did like a show, but the chivalrous act made me more sad than happy. For an instant, I saw a kinder side of Robbie, but it felt more like a display for his new pal than for me. Fuck me, why should that upset me? My future husband-to-be was here, acting sweetly. Was this my future, a roll of the dice for two Robbies? The sweet one, the mean one? Either way, I was at his mercy.
