The champagne glass had barely grazed my lips when I saw him. It took me a second to verify that, indeed, itwashim on the dance floor.

Clark was here, and I felt it in my lower stomach. He was in a suit, and he looked extremely handsome. There was a woman in his arms; she was beautiful, around his age, and reeked of sophistication.

Looking at them dancing together made me believe that I had imagined the things I felt in the last few days. There was some sort of familiarity between them.

“Why am I not surprised to see you here?” a smooth, familiar voice said.

I turned to my right, and Prescott was standing there glaring at Clark. It had to be illegal to be as handsome as he was. There was an air of confidence that always seemed to be wrapped around him.

“Prescott, right?”

“Or the guy you assaulted with a bottle.” He smirked.

“I thought you tried to kidnap me,” I pressed.

“Abduct.”

“What?”

“You’re not a kid, so kidnapping is not the appropriate term.”

“I recall you stating otherwise,” I added bitterly.

“I tend to do and say things to piss people off all the time, so don’t take it personally.” He shrugged, then extended his arm toward me. “May I have this dance?”

Usually, I would have said no, but he was handsome and I was at a party, and then a tiny part of me reminded me that Clark was dancing with someone else already.

Unsurprisingly, he led us by where Clark and his mystery woman were dancing.

“He’s at your eight o’clock,” Prescott whispered in my ear.

I was confused, since I knew Clark was right behind us and hadn’t noticed us. Or if he had, he didn’t care. Still, I looked where Prescott had mentioned, and Mayor Callahan was standing there with a group of crusty old men.

Perfect. He didn’t seem to have a bimbo draped around him, so this was my chance.

I think Prescott sensed I was ready to flee, because he smoothly made me do a turn, and I came face-to-face with Clark. His eyes widened when he saw me; I could feel his gaze on my face and then tracked as it moved down my body. The next second, I was facing Prescott once more, and he looked smug.

“I’m so sorry, Rache, but I need to speak with Oriana for a second,” I heard Clark say, and then Prescott was twirling me into his arms.

Prescott grabbed hold of the other woman’s hand, and she didn’t look all too pleased about it. She was glaring at me for taking her date.

We were dancing in silence, mostly because I refused to look at Clark. My eyes focused on Prescott and Clark’s date.

“Ori.” Clark broke the silence after a minute.

I bit my lip as my eyes met his. They were intense, and I felt the fingers on my waist dig into my flesh.

“You look beautiful.”

“I don’t think your date is very happy at the moment,” I bit back.

Clark looked at me, and then at whereRacheand Prescott were dancing. Then a pleased smile crossed his features when his eyes landed on mine again.

He pulled us so close I could feel his heartbeat, and I was sure he could feel just how erratically mine was beating. I was never one to notice how I fit in with other people, but I did so now. Even with my heels, he seemed to be just a smidge taller than me. He was broader, so I felt small in his arms. The way he held me was almost possessive, but also protective.

“Rachel is Prescott’s ex-wife. And despite what happened between them, I considered her a friend.”

My mouth formed a silent O. Suddenly the body language of the couple next to us made sense. There was some sort of familiarity, but it was strained.
