“He showed up at my door a few hours ago.”

“Are you sure he’s yours?”

Prescott snorted. “He looks like me with Max’s hair.”

Definitely his kid. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t think there was more for me to add. I was sure he just needed to tell someone on his own terms.

“His mother passed away; his aunt brought him to meet me.” A cynical laugh left him. “I’m pretty sure he was conceived right after Jana broke things off with me.”

I whistled. “Well, like you told me when I was hesitant to pursue things with Ori…life works in mysterious ways.”

He scowled at me. “I didn’t say such a thing.”

“I read between the lines.”

He snorted. At least his coping mechanism was getting better, and he was no longer getting drunk on the anniversary that Jana had an abortion.

Prescott leaned back, looking up at the celling. He was so still that if it wasn’t for the fact that his eyes were open and blinking, I would have thought he’d passed out on me.

“I kissed Rachel,” he admitted, and I wasn’t at all surprised by it.

There was a lot I could say, but now wasn’t the time for me to give it to him straight.

“Rache was awesome. I wish you would have seen that sooner. You’re a decent guy, Dunnett.”

He didn’t say anything, and tonight’s events would stop him from seeing himself in any redeeming light, so I saved my breath.

“I’m going to head out. I know tomorrow is a big day for you.”

“Thanks again for helping me with all the permits and shit.” I grinned at him.

He shook his head, but smiled back. “I’m happy for you.”

I wished I could return the sentiment for him too. When I got back to bed, Oriana was instantly curling up to me.

“You heard everything, didn’t you?” I teased her.

“Is he going to be okay?” she mumbled into my throat.

“Yeah…one thing I learned is that sooner or later all the roads lead us back home.”

I felt her smile pressed against my throat.

“We have our first ultrasound tomorrow,” she added.

I smiled. “Are you sleepy?”

She shook her head against my chest.

“Want me to make you sleepy?”

“Please,” she whimpered as I started to roll on top of her.

Life was unexpected and tragic, but always beautiful.
